[Mis à jour le 04/06/2021 à 18h40] Faced with a context of a lasting health crisis, the Formula 1 world championship persists in its ambition to organize the longest season in its history. Indeed, no less than 23 dates are currently on the 2021 calendar, from March to December, while waiting to know the identity of the replacement for the Singapore GP. Until now, the discipline has never exceeded the threshold of 21 Grands Prix, total reached in 2016, 2018 and 2019. Initially, the 2020 financial year provided for 22 rounds, but the pandemic limited it to 17. The 28 April, F1 announced the cancellation of the Canadian Grand Prix and his replacement by the Turkish GP, who made their return to the calendar last year. But on May 20, the organizers finally indicated that this GP of Turkey was canceled. Result: the race planned at Le Castellet is brought forward by one week (to June 20), while a second Grand Prix on the Spielberg circuit (Austria) is added to the calendar, as in 2020, under the name of GP of Styria. . And on June 4, it’s the turn of the night meeting of Singapore, scheduled for October 3, from renounce. It could be replaced by a second race in Austin (United States), by the Turkish GP which would be reinstated, or by the Chinese GP.

This year, despite the travel difficulties inherent in the health crisis, the F1 caravan does not want to leave faraway destinations. As a reminder, in 2020, all races planned in Asia, Oceania and the American continent had been canceled. However, the Australian Grand Prix could not assume its opening round status. Canceled at the last minute in March 2020, the Melbourne meeting this time found refuge in the course of the second half of the year, on November 21.
Therefore, Bahrain kicked off the 2021 season on March 28. As a reminder, the Sakhir track hosted two races last fall, including one on the new exterior track, just before the Abu Dhabi final. Subsequently, the packages from China and Vietnam pave the way for a series of European events. It starts with two of the good surprises of the previous year, in this case the Grand Prix d ‘Emilia Romagna in Imola, on April 18, and that of Portugal, on the Algarve circuit in Portimao, on May 2.
As of May 9, the calendar displays a more traditional face with the sequence of the Grands Prix of Spain, Monaco, Azerbaijan and that of France, in Le Castellet, scheduled for Sunday, June 20, 2021. It will be followed by two rounds in Austria, then the Britain, Hungary and Belgium. Note that the British event at Silverstone could be the scene of the introduction of the unprecedented sprint race (100 km) as a new qualifying format. With a year and a half behind the initial schedule, a health crisis requires, the Dutch Grand Prix plans to celebrate its return on September 5. A week later, the tour of the Old Continent will conclude with the iconic Italian Grand Prix, in the temple of speed in Monza.
After a stopover in Russia, heading to the Asian continent in October with the Japanese Grand Prix on the Suzuka 8 circuit. In the process, make way for american triptych in recent years, namely in order, the United States, Mexico and Brazil, except that the last two cities bear the designation of GP of Mexico and GP of Sao Paulo. After a detour through Australia, the F1 caravan will set up its wheels for the first time in Saudi Arabia, on December 5, before the traditional Abu Dhabi Twilight Final, December 12.
This calendar, approved by the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is obviously liable to undergo further modifications, depending on the evolution of the health situation in each country concerned. To note that the generic start time of a Grand Prix has been brought forward from 3.10 p.m. to 3 p.m..
