The Bugatti Chiron Super Sport pushes the limits of its range a little further by promising to cruise up to 440 km / h, against more than 3 million euros.
New Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 2021 – When our name is Bugatti, we do not bother with the obsessive 0 to 100 km / h which is a benchmark in the world of sports. Time to say it, this fateful bar is largely crossed by the new Alsatian missile turned towards aerodynamics, preferring directly to evoke its delivered performance. from 0 to 200 km / h: 5.8 s. However, do not believe that the diva cuts the conversation short. On the contrary, she is keen to express herself at speeds that are largely prohibited.
A break in the V-max race
Lately, Bugatti had announced that it no longer wanted to outbid the race at maximum speed. Probably annoyed by the record set by the SSC Tuatara (+ 500 km/h), the tricolor firm decided to concentrate its efforts on the running gear of its Chiron, for the benefit of agility, to shine on winding circuits. From this questioning was born the Pur Sport, limited to “only” 350 km / h at peak, but devilishly more efficient in curves than the rest of the range.
We do not remake
But chase the natural, it comes back at a gallop. With the Super Sport, Bugatti offers a descendant of the Super Sport 300+ which holds, since 2019, the V-max record for a Chiron, with 490 km / h. An ultra-limited 30-piece model that comes back to us in 2021 in a more polished variant, however capable of reaching 440 km / h. To achieve this, the 8.0 l displacement W16 has been thoroughly revised to gain 100 hp and see its power peak at 1600 ch. The modifications mainly concerned the turbocharger, the oil pump and the cylinder head with valve control, as well as the gearbox and the clutch.
As the crow flies
Truly dedicated to straight-line runs, the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport increases the speed of its engine from 300 rpm, up to 7,100 rpm, while the maximum torque of 1600 Nm is now available between 2000 and 7000 rounds, against 6000 previously. An optimization that allows it toimprove acceleration from 0 to 400 km / h by 7%until maximum speed is reached by extending the transmission of the seventh gear by 3.6%.
To cut through the air, it also had to take care of its aerodynamics. And it is precisely from the Super Sport 300+ that it inherits its elongated cantilever, “Longtail” type. 25 cm longer than the original Chiron, it “maintains the laminar flow on the body as long as possible”. This is also worth it to enlarge the cross section of its diffuser, whose breaking edge is moved higher in order to significantly reduce the suction generated at this point, and therefore the wind resistance. These arrangements forced engineers to split the central exhaust into two parts distributed at each end of the stern, with vertically aligned outlets.
The bow of the Chiron Super Sport is not to be outdone. It also benefited from a review of its specifications, embodied by air curtains located on the front corners, next to the air intakes, which in particular allow air to be directed towards the wheel arches, so that it flows as close and as long as possible over the sides of the car. If the nine air vents housed on each wing refer to the Bugatti EB 110 Super Sport from 1992, their main function is toto release air pressure from the front wheel arches, creating aerodynamic downforce on the axle. They are accompanied by additional outlets on the front wheel arches which help to further balance the aerodynamic loads.
On the aesthetic level, the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport enjoys the front bumper of the 300+, just like the entire rear section, but is distinguished by its Y-shaped 5-spoke specific rims. As an option, it is possible to replace them with magnesium wheels, from the Chiron Pur Sport, to lighten a little more the whole which, of origin, already saves 23 kg compared to the classic Chiron.
Less extreme than the 300+, the Super Sport is more bourgeois, on board, despite the shameful speeds with which it can cross. The interior makes the emphasis on leather, polished aluminum, as well as carbon. She should show herself however firmer, because its specifically adapted chassis forced its parents to install harder springs. However, the controlled damping can adapt to the way of driving to regulate the movement of the chassis in six milliseconds.
Up to 478 km / h? …
Bugatti finally announces that it has developed new compounds, in collaboration with Michelin. The Pilot Sport Cup 2 fitted to the Chiron Super Sport are able to run continuously up to 500 km / h. A speed that the hypercar must be able to approach, when we know thata Chiron, initially limited to 420 km / h, can be unbridled electronically on request to reach 458 km / h, according to Willi Netuschil, its chief engineer. Since then, would this Super Sport not be able to graze 480 km / h? We are entitled to hypothesize it.
New Bugatti Chiron Super Sport price
The first deliveries of the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport will begin early 2022, against the modest sum of 3.2 million euros, at least. That is a discount of 300,000 euros compared to the very exclusive 300+. For now, Bugatti does not mention the production scale of its new baby.
