A simple V6 in a Ferrari? Not only, since that of the 296 GTB attaches the services of an electric motor to accumulate more than 800 hp.
New Ferrari 296 GTB 2021 – Seven years after the introduction of V6 hybrids in the Formula 1 championship, Ferrari finally honors this architecture on a production model at similar size to that of the F8 Tributo. Named 296 GTB, this PHEV berlinetta has the nerve to supplant its V8-powered counterpart in terms of power.
While waiting for a 100% electric
If no 100% electric Ferrari is expected before 2025, the Italian craftsman rightly considers the contribution of such technology in addition to its thermal blocks. He had already demonstrated this last year via his very first plug-in hybrid supercar named SF90 Stradale, and accumulating 1000 hp, on the basis of a V8 of 780 hp. In 2021, he drives the point home with the one that was long nicknamed “Baby Ferrari” and expected as the Dino of modern times. But, reading its technical sheet, don’t expect her to take on the role of the people’s Ferrari.
Already a record
Long before adding horsepower to kilowatts, it is fashionable to pay homage to the nobility of the thermal block driving this new Ferrari. Probably annoyed by the performance delivered by the new house V6 of the Maserati MC20 (630 ch), up to the acceleration of the Tributo’s 720 hp V8, the Maranello firm was keen to push back the limits of mechanics. Strong of 663 ch, for a displacement of 2992 cm3, its 6-cylinder in V wins the rAbsolute ecord of specific power for a production car, with 221 hp per liter.
A marvel of goldsmith’s work of which the “V” opens at 120 ° to accommodate the turbos within it, both for the sake of compactness and lowering the center of gravity, or even reducing mass. According to Ferrari, this volume optimization benefits fluid dynamics, increasing the intake efficiency. But to achieve such specific power, it was necessary to increase the pressure in the combustion chamber considerably, but also to redesign the turbochargers, with more efficient alloys.
These innovations, combined with the development of a specific exhaust line, promise a particular sound to this V6 which, according to the official voice, would approach the harmonies deployed by an atmospheric V12even at low revs. So much so that internally, this block has been given the nickname “little V12”.
To magnify the performance of this incredible V6, Ferrari is joining it a 122 kW (167 hp) electric motor, whose technology is inspired by that applied in Formula 1, in order to accumulate 830 ch. Power delivered only at the rear wheels, for the first time on a hybrid Ferrari, as the big sister SF90 has all-wheel drive. For its part, the maximum torque reached 740 Nm at 6250 rpm, allowing in particular to cut down 0 to 100 km / h in 2.9 s up to a speed of 330 km / h.
These performances finally prove to be equivalent to those of the F8 Tributoor even slightly lower with regard to the maximum speed, due to the excess weight generated by its plug-in hybrid architecture. However, the battery only delivers 7,45 kWh, allowing only 25 km of purely electric driving, up to 135 km / h. With a total dry weight of 1,470 kg, the Ferrari 296 GTB is 140 kg heavier compared to its 100% thermal counterpart. For Ferrari, the interest is obviously to lower the average of its CO2 emissions, in order to reduce the bill for fines imposed by the European Union.
Aesthetically speaking, the new Ferrari 296 GTB has made the choice of cleaner lines than previously. A shock of simplification whose Roma was the instigator and which benefits aerodynamics. The berlinetta adds a active rear spoiler inspired by the LaFerrari in order to generate an additional charge. The cooling of the braking system is also involved around a the“Aero” caliper with integrated air intake, inaugurated by the SF90 Stradale. This element requires a duct that routes air from the front bumper to the inside of the wheel arch, which on the 296 GTB has been incorporated into the headlight design.
Prix Ferrari 296 GTB
En option, Ferrari proposed an Assetto Fiorano pack lightening the assembly up to 15 kg, tires Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R, shock absorbers with fixed “track” adjustment and aerodynamic elements generating more downforce. For the moment, we do not yet know the launch date of this new hybrid Ferrari, soberly named 296 GTB, nor its price. No doubt the latter will happily exceed € 300,000.
