© IgorZh, Adobe Stock

In the Arctic, the Russian army is accumulating material and secret weapons. Among them, there would be a nuclear torpedo project called Poseidon 2M39. This super-weapon would have the particularity of sneaking onto the seabed and then detonating its nuclear charge in order to generate a radioactive tsunami on the targeted coastal zone.

[EN VIDÉO] What is the most powerful nuclear bomb in history?
On October 30, 1961, a 57 megaton atomic bomb exploded over the site of Novaya Zemlya, Russia. Called Tsar Bomba, it is the most powerful bomb in history.

Swarms of drones suicides, hypersonic nuclear missiles …, when it comes to war, the human imagination has no limit. Among the super-weapon projects, here is Poseidon 2M39, a torpedo being developed by Russia and which would be designed to target coastal areas in order to devastate them by generating a gigantic tsunami. Radioactive fallout would then render an area uninhabitable for decades. The ecological consequences would also be formidable.

The Poseidon 2M39 would be stealthy and powered by a nuclear reactor. It could pass through coastal defense systems to accomplish its fateful mission with its multi-megaton nuclear warhead.

The discovery of this torpedo able to squeeze the surface of the seabed is nothing new. It was considered a legend and even a joke since its revelation around 2015. As early as 2018, the Russian president, Vladimir Poutine had promised the arrival of a new generation of weapons with this famous Poseidon 2M39 and a missile hypersonique baptized Tsirkon. The latter is no longer a myth for the US authorities, as it has been tested in theArctic less than a month ago, as reported by the Russian news agency Tass. For once, the threat of the development of the Poseidon 2M39 missile now seems credible for experts. They see in this weapon an additional lever of dissuasion, but also a weighty argument to take control, during negotiations on the control of the armaments. It is for these reasons that like the Tsirkon missile, it must become concrete for the Russian authorities.

This is no longer a joke

Last year, this threat was mentioned publicly by Christopher A Ford, former Assistant Secretary of State for International Security and Non-Proliferation, on the airwaves of CNN. He considered this weapon a danger to American coastal cities. For their part, the Norwegian intelligence services are worried about the ecological consequences of a possible accident during testing. In any case, this is what declared to CNN, its leader, Vice-Admiral Nils Andreas Stensønes. However, at this moment, satellite images clearly show that Russia is amassing large quantities of material on its military bases located on the Arctic coast.

And on these bases, underground installations are precisely capable of accommodating the Poseidon 2M39 experimental torpedo. It must be said that due to global warming, this area becomes highly strategic with the melting ice. In this sector, the Russian authorities are seeking to secure their northern coast and open a new sea route between Europe and Asia. For its part, concerned about this reinforced presence, the American army is stepping up its maneuvers in its nearby maritime zone. With the current tensions, all the elements of a cold war 2.0 are gradually falling into place.
