In an attempt to limit wild parties in rental homes on its platform, Airbnb has put in place restrictions that only affect young adults. The firm has reportedly blocked more than 100,000 suspicious bookings in the United States in a year.
Renting between individuals seems a good idea to get a littlesilver with an extra bedroom or during his absence. However, a number of hosts on Airbnb have discovered the hard way that some people abuse the system to organize giant parties, and find their homes ransacked the next day. In an attempt to put an end to this practice, the firm has set up a wild anti-party system for a year.
The principle is simple: those under 25 who do not have at least three positive opinions cannot rent an entire house near where they live. This restriction was introduced in early 2020 in Canada following a series of violent parties that killed several people, then extended to United States in July last year. It has since been implemented also in the United Kingdom, Spain and France.
Over 100,000 bookings blocked in the United States
In one year, Airbnb would have blocked more than 100,000 suspicious bookings in the United States. The city of The Angels leads with more than 15,000 blocked bookings, followed by Atlanta (12,000) and Chicago (10,000). This restriction does not affect users who are at least 25 years old. Under this age they can rent a house if they have more than three positive reviews or if it is far from their place of residence, and they can still rent a private room or a hotel room.
Airbnb has also banned all parties since the start of the pandemic, including for hosts that explicitly allow it. The firm has removed this option on the ads and has limited the total number of people in housing. This policy should continue at least until the end of the summer.
