Auto-Moto had the chance to take place aboard the electric Opel Manta. Video discovery of the iconic coupe in restomod configuration.

Opel Manta GSe Electric Mod – You discovered it last spring, in photos. Here is thata more trendy Opel Manta comes back to us in video, during a meeting with Auto-Moto.

The health crisis is sometimes good. This is at the end of the first confinement of 2020 that the Opel design teams worked on this unexpected project to modify an antique Opel Manta from 1973 with Restomod sauce. Between tradition and modernity, the small coupé remains faithful to its original silhouette mixed with state-of-the-art bodywork elements. He also took the opportunity to convert to a 100% electric propulsion mode.

Communication object

The first was to administer to this Manta the aesthetic codes recently acquired by the Opel range. This is how she takes over on her own the iconic Vizor grille inaugurated in 2020 by the second opus de Mokka, although it is good to remember that the urban crossover was itself inspired by the facies of its grandmother to set up this new bow visual identity, bringing together optics and logo within a single black lacquered element, which all future Opels will soon display in the future.

Naked as a worm … glow

This Vizor, applied to the Mante GSe, is played in concept car mode via an LED screen vector of messages customizable to the envi. A modern day (dummy) grille that shows very exposed to shocks, in the absence of the original chrome bumpers. The designers have freed themselves from it to smooth the contours of this extraordinary Manta for purify your silhouette as much as possible. However, the lower part of its bow has a specific spoiler that energizes its line.

Black hood required for the nod to many of its ancestors who wore this decoration in the past, recently reinterpreted by the SUVs displayed in the catalog. The sash contrasts with the bright yellow, almost neon, of the rest of the body. At the rear, the lights are replaced by LED rims gathered within a black band also echoing the Vizor.

Past present Future

The contrast is also striking between the huge 17 ”rims of Ronal origin, a big name in German tuning, and the mini wheel arches that accommodate them, with a shoehorn. Despite these sacrifices to modernity, this Manta wanted to keep many original features such as door handles or mirrors for a final result ideally combining the old with the contemporary.

Thermal farewell

The finding is identical in the passenger compartment. Behind theantique three-spoke steering wheel, the boarding blanket the Mokka Pure Panel digital panel split into two screens of 12 and 10 ”diagonal, which allows in particular to monitor the state of charge of the battery of the machine. Indeed, the good old 105 hp 4-cylinder has been put away in favor of a 100% electric motor delivering 147 hp, for a torque of 255 Nm, transmitted only to the rear wheels. And the top of the “cool attitude” is to have kept the 4-speed manual transmission initial. Once again the balance is perfect between past and present.

Conversely, this electric blanket will be confined to getaways to small radius of action. The capacity of its “battery” reaches only 31 kWh to ensure 200 km of autonomy. With a 9 kW charger, it takes a little less than 4 hours to regain color.

Soon produced?

To date, this is a unique copy that Opel does not intend to market. But faced with the growing enthusiasm for the little German girl, it is not excluded that a small series will emerge. A case to follow … very closely.
