Contactless systems for cars still just as easy to hack

Since 2009, some models are available with a “keyless” option. And while many motorists appreciate the convenience of this option, it should be taken into account that this system is easily hacked.

Open and start your car without having to insert a key in the ignition, what a treat. Yes, but here it is, if technology does wonders, it also pushes the thieves to redouble their ingenuity.

And with this system, criminals have no difficulty in breaking into cars without breaking into them. All they have to do is pick up the signal emitted by the remote control standing close to the car to open it.

A few days ago, l’ADACthe German Motorists Association, carried out a new study about the “keyless” system. Result, since 2016, only 23 models out of 501 are equipped with an anti-piracy system. Suffice to say that the proportion is still too low and works in favor of thieves.

A reliable device

With the resurgence of thefts, some experts discovered in 2011 a device capable of countering the practices. UWB (Use of Ultra-Wideband Pulse) therefore makes it possible to secure your “keyless” system.

And if some manufacturers like Jaguar, Land Rover, Audi, Seat, Skoda, Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes seem to be making efforts on this subject, it is still far from being the case on the French side.

Faced with this, the ADAC therefore proposes: “refuser l’option keyless” or even “deactivate it”. Finally, it is always best to keep your remote control away from walls, doors and windows and to park your car in a closed, private car park.
