At the end of the first half of 2020, marked in large part by the coronavirus crisis, several models had been credited with an increase in their base price. This primarily concerned the cheapest car in this ranking, the Dacia Logan (from 8,050 to 8,150 euros). Its runner-up Dacia Sandero (from 8,190 to 8,290) followed the same trend, an increase of 100 euros which also affected the Dacia Logan MCV (from 9,150 to 9,250). At the foot of the podium, the entry prices for Suzuki Celerio and Fiat Panda are unchanged, at 9,790 and 9,990 euros respectively. The cheapest Kia Picanto drops from 11,100 to 11,290 euros while the Dacia Lodgy drops to 10,850 euros in the LPG version. Note the end of the marketing in Europe of the Ford Ka +, the Opel Karl and Adam, as well as the thermal Smart, now much more expensive in 100% electric.

Our prize list is an opportunity to highlight models with little exposure, but offered at very attractive prices. Competition that is good for consumers in the long term. In 1996, you had to save 6.36 months of minimum wage to buy a Seat Marbella (then billed at 36,590 francs), the cheapest vehicle on the market. Twenty years later the price of the cheapest car sold in France is equivalent to 5.3 months of minimum wage… Another good news for buyers: if most of the cars offered under 13,000 euros are city cars, there is also a station wagon, a compact MPV, an SUV or a minivan. Large families or drivers who prefer livability are therefore not forgotten. These advances come at a cost, however. That of a more distant production : a Seat Marbella was made in Spain, while the Dacias are now assembled in Romania or Morocco, where wages are further squeezed. As in many areas, globalization is on the move …
Cheapest cars: the methodology
The prices displayed in this classification are the prices displayed in the catalog of each brand, without promotion or bonus / penalty. We have voluntarily removed from this classification the Renault Twizy, offered from 7,540 euros, as well as the recent Citroën Ami, displayed from 6,900 euros. For us, these electric vehicles, with their homologation quadricycle synonymous with a bonus of 900 euros, are too confined to urban use – and do not always require obtaining a B license – to appear in our list reserved for multi-use cars.
