Formula 1: Porsche and Red Bull, imminent formalization?

The commitment of the Volkswagen group is confirmed a little more, with the rumor of an association between Porsche and Red Bull for next March. Here’s what we know.

According to our colleagues from Motorsport.com, Porsche et Red Bull are at a very advanced stage of negotiations for the German firm to power the red bull. We are talking about a possible formalization next March. All this information is consistent with the FIA’s desire and commitment to integrate a new brand into Formula 1, before 2026. Meetings had previously been held with the presence of the Volkswagen group, which was delighted with the conclusions reached to integrate the competition. Their requirements related to the simplification of the hybrid block, much too complex and expensive according to them. That’s why the World Motor Sport Council agreed last December to scrap MGU-H, switch F1 to synthetic fuel and cap budgets for power unit development. Data that delight the leaders of Porsche and facilitate the arrival of the VW group.

The presence ofHelmut Marko-Red Bull team manager- would also benefit the Austrian team against the other teams, in the search for an agreement with Porsche or Audi. He maintains good relations with Fritz Enzinger -head of motorsports in the VW group-. This would explain the strong commitment of his team with the firm which seems to be the most likely to integrate the discipline before 2026. Once again, according to the sources of Motorsport.comit would only need the approvals of the supervisory bodies of the Volkswagen group, to formalize the news.

Bad news for McLaren which seemed to have reached an agreement with the Audi brand a few months ago. This idea was quickly denied, after the rumor of a takeover of the English brand by the German group was racing in the F1 paddock. However, there is no smoke without fire. This confirms that discussions had certainly taken place between the two bodies.

The interest of seeing a new power unit entering the competition is a priority for the FIA and a necessity for certain teams. The cases of Red Bull or of McLaren are the perfect example. After Honda’s departure, the Austrian team finds itself having to operate an engine that they did not design. However, this has led them to have to develop a new “Red Bull Powertrain” engine department, which will facilitate the engagement and agreement with an external manufacturer, for logistics, communication and production issues. In the case of McLaren, the British team aspires to embrace glory in Formula 1 again. Nevertheless, it is today powered by Mercedes. The latter could see this as a brake, while she wants to beat this own team.

The answer to the question of whether the entry of a new engine block in the discipline is unanimous. Answer therefore in the next few months to find out if the objective of seeing a new manufacturer integrate Formula 1 will materialize through the agreement between Porsche and Red Bull.
