During the preview of the new documentary series MotoGP™ Unlimited in Madrid, on Wednesday February 16, Marc Márquez spoke about his injury issues. The eight-time world champion in the discipline also spoke to the media just before the broadcast to explain the difficulties he encountered in returning to the highest level.
As a reminder, the Spaniard had fallen in 2020 in Jerez. He had then been sidelined from competition for nearly 12 months because of a serious arm injury. At the end of 2021, the Thunder of Cervera fall again during a workout. He then suffered from diplopia (blurred vision) and missed the last two Grand Prix of the season.
All these injuries particularly affected the mind of the MotoGP champion, who had considered quitting the sport :
« During the 2020/2021 season, I hit rock bottom. With double vision, I couldn’t do anything because I was dizzy. In fact, the doctor, after the operation, told me that it was a miracle that I regained my sight. Psychologically, it’s hard and the sporting aspects have taken a back seat.
DNA is not lost, when I lose it I will have to end my career… And it happened to me this winter, I thought about not racing anymore because there were real options for that to happen . The doctor gave me options and the third was, ‘My eyesight will probably be fine to live a normal life, but you can’t go 250 kilometers per hour on a motorbike.
strong in character, Marc Márquez is signed up for the 2022 MotoGP season. After a rather positive pre-season test for Team Honda Repsol, he is fully focused on the first Grand Prix of the season in Qatar, from March 4 to 6taking tweezers on the level of performance that it will be able to display:
“At the moment there are 12 bikes that can win the World Championship, but the favorites are the current champion and his runner-up, Fabio Quartararo and Pecco Bagnaia. If your name isn’t Rafa Nadal, you can’t be the favorite to win after being injured for two years. »
