Do you plan to stock up on oil cans? Pay attention to the expiry date and storage conditions!

It’s always a good idea to have one or two oil cans in advance at home, especially if you know that your car tends to lose a lot. But unless the tank is perceived, and there, it is another problem, the consumption should remain relatively reasonable. If it may seem trivial, storing oil for too long can nevertheless be harmful for the latter, and therefore for the engine. And the experts are formal on the subject, affirming that it is not possible to keep your cans forever, even if they have never been opened. But then, how long can we keep them without risk? We take stock for you.

About three years, but be careful

According to Total, it is possible to keep your oil cans for a maximum of three years after purchase. Beyond that, it will then be expired, even if the storage conditions were ideal. Some brands claim that it is possible to go up to five years, but all agree that once the cap is opened, the oil should be consumed within a year. In case of doubt, the best is still to buy a bidon, in order to avoid all risks. Because expired oil can then lose its lubricating properties and therefore damage the engine.

Also remember to keep your oil in optimal conditions, ie away from light and humidity. Avoid direct sunlight and heat, which can lead to faster expiry.
