Without exception, the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps take place in the heart of summer. However, the year 2020 was precisely an exception because of the health crisis, leading to the postponement of the event in the course of the autumn, at the end of October. Less than a year later, the great Belgian endurance classic has returned to its usual niche. Thus, the 73e edition is scheduled during this weekend of July 31 and 1is August, with a race start scheduled for Saturday at 16h30. Free practice, pre-qualifying, qualifying and night practice take place on Thursday, while the great field stands Friday from 7:50 p.m. to 8:20 p.m..
58 entered including 25 in the Pro category
The 24 Hours of Spa event is almost a century old. Founded in 1924, it is currently reserved for cars meeting GT3 regulations, across four categories. In 2021, among the 58 entered, there are 25 cars in the Pro category, 17 in Silver, 14 in Pro-Am and 2 in Am Cup. In Pro category, we find the trifle of eight manufacturers participating in the GT World Challenge Europe season, namely Porsche, Audi, Mercedes, Lamborghini, Ferrari, BMW, McLaren, Aston Martin, all registered, while Bentley is only present in Silver.
Three wins in a row for Porsche?
This year, the biggest contingent in contention for the final victory is assured by Porsche with no less than 7 cars lined up in Pro. Moreover, the Porsche 911 GT3 R remains on two successes in a row to the general in the Ardennes. Last year, the local Laurens Vanthoor won in the company of the Briton Nick Tandy and the New Zealander Earl Bamber, succeeding the winners of the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps to the trio composed of the French Kévin Estre, the Austrian Richard Lietz and Danish director Michael Christensen.
