Banned since the beginning of this year 2021, the circulation of two-wheelers between two lines once again benefits from an experimental status and becomes legal again in 21 departments.
Promise kept. The Interministerial Delegate for Road Safety, Marie Gautier-Melleray, announced at the beginning of the year, at the end of the previous period of experimentation with inter-line circulation of two-wheelers, that the idea would not be fully abandoned. In fact, the practice is again authorized as part of a new full-scale study from this Monday, August 2.
According to a decree published in the Official Journal this Friday, July 30, motorcyclists and other scooter drivers can go up the lines, as many of them also claimed. And this in 21 departments of France which are: those of Ile-de-France, Alpes-Maritimes, Bouches-du-Rhône, Drôme, Haute-Garonne, Gironde, Hérault, Isère, Loire-Atlantique, North, the Pyrénées-Orientales, the Rhône, the Var and the Vaucluse.
The approach may seem surprising in view of the previous statistical results, the two-wheeler accident rate increased by 12% on average on the affected network. But Road Safety wanted to extend the experience to a larger part of the territory in order to obtain more meaningful figures.
The authorities are also taking care to introduce new rules, in particular with regard to speed. The two-wheelers are supposed to respect a speed difference of 30 km / h maximum compared to the other vehicles which they reassemble, the limit of 50 km / h remaining valid in absolute terms. It remains to be seen how the constabulary could identify possible infringements in such traffic conditions …
We can bet that this additional experiment will allow everyone to familiarize themselves with this practice and lead to better cohabitation between users, regardless of the number of wheels in their vehicle.
Some common sense rules
Passing regularly from the steering wheel to the handlebars and vice versa, allow us to recall some rules of common sense to be observed on both sides.
By two-wheeler:
- do not inter-line between lanes other than the last two on the left
- do not overtake other two-wheelers in the inter-queues
- limit the use of the horn and other unnecessary gas shots
- leave the inter-queues as soon as traffic allows
- a thank you, hand or foot, it is not the sea to drink.
By car and other vehicles with four or more wheels:
- the flashing light remains the basis of any lane change
- the control of mirrors and blind spots too, and not only with respect to two-wheelers
- move slightly away from the inter-lane when the width of the lanes allows it
- take into account the acceleration capacities of a two-wheeler and certain motorcycles in particular
- do not occupy the left lane unnecessarily when the right lane (s) is (are) free
