While waiting for their official presentation this fall, Google has lifted the veil on the design and some of the innovations of its new Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. On the menu, a radically different style, an in-house Tensor system on a chip and a resolutely top-of-the-range positioning.

Google is preparing a comeback in the niche of smartphones High-end Android and would like to let it be known. The Californian giant has just organized a hype around the Pixel 6 et Pixel 6 Pro which will be revealed this fall. After a well-made Pixel 5 but lacking the sense of innovation and the finery of a premium smartphone, its successor has greater ambitions. Completely redesigned design, muscular photo module and above all, for the first time, a SOC (system on a chip) Tensor developed by Google. Many of the rumors and renders that have been circulating for weeks about the Pixel 6 have been proven to be correct.

Starting with the big aesthetic evolution introduced by the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, with this photo module dorsal housed in a protruding bar that occupies the entire width. It comes as a hyphen between the two tones of color. According to official images released by Google, the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro will be available in five colors. Both smartphones are finished in aluminium, polished for the Pixel 6 Pro, matte for the Pixel 6.

The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro have a SoC Tensor

The Pixel 6 will be equipped with a 6.4-inch FHD + screen with a refresh rate of 90 Hz. The Pixel 6 Pro will offer a 6.7-inch QHD + 120Hz display with curved edges. Both will be equipped with adigital entrepreneurs integrated under the screen and a front camera nestled in a punch in central position. For the photo part, the rear module of the Pixel 6 Pro includes a sensor main wide-angle, one ultra-wide-angle and one telephoto lens with 4X optical zoom. Google reserves the details of the specifications of these sensors for the official presentation this fall but indicated that the main module captured 150% of light in addition to that of Pixel 5. The Pixel 6 takes the photo configuration of the 6 Pro, minus the telephoto lens.

Both smartphones Android 12 will have in common the SoC Tensor, one of the great novelties that raises a lot of questions. Based on an Arm architecture, this processor will optimize artificial intelligence functions, with Google promising a “transformed experience” by matter of photography and voice recognition.

Google was already using its own chips for processing photography (Pixel Visual Core), for artificial intelligence (Pixel Neural Core) and for security (Titan-M). The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro will be the first smartphones to use a Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) as main processor instead of a Qualcomm chip. Google has opted for the strategy of a closer optimization between the hardware and software part of its Pixel by ensuring mastery of these two areas. An orientation that is closer to what does Apple for a few years now with its iPhone.

There are still many aspects to discover about the capabilities and performance of the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. But in any case it seems clear that Google wanted to give itself the means to catch up with the peloton of high-end smartphones in an attempt to find a place alongside Samsung, Apple and others Huawei. Will he finally succeed this time around? Answer in the fall …
