A forward-looking report released by the US Air Force’s research laboratory envisions several systems based on powerful electromagnetic technologies to neutralize drones, or a nuclear missile attack.

What will be the defense systems to protect American territory from a nuclear attack in 2060? Among the avenues imagined, there is that of force fields. The ones who protect spaceships in sci-fi movies. The term is in any case mentioned several times in the report Directed Energy Futures 2060 from the US research laboratory Air Strength. This defensive system could stop both an attack from drones armed, as well as missiles nuclear. The prospective study describes more precisely the use of a beam ofenergy electromagnetic pointing its target. The device could be carried on board an aircraft or integrated into a military satellite.

It could also be a radius laser coming to destroy the drone, or the interference of frequencies radio. It must be said that the weapons at electromagnetic energy are not specifically science fiction. More than thirty countries currently operate them. Currently being tested, or already operational, their main purpose is to neutralize civilian or military drones.

This is no longer science fiction

For the time being, aside from eliminating drones, scientists are very far from being able to destroy a real missile with this kind of technology. It would be all the more difficult to achieve if it is a missile hypersonique whose trajectory is impossible to anticipate. But within forty years, such technology could well be developed, when anti-drone weapons are no longer part of the realm of science fiction.

In addition to these force field systems antimissile or to disturb drones, the report also discusses riot guns for police and aimed at humans. This process already exists and it door the name of Active Denial System (ADS). The millimeter waves clocked at 95 Ghz from the device heat the skin of rioters in the vicinity to 55 ° C. If this is already achieved today, the arrival of a real force field is only a matter of time.
