Renault Captur hybrid test: behind the wheel of the E-Tech 145

Renault Captur hybrid test: behind the wheel of the E-Tech 145
ADVERTISEMENT

After the plug-in hybrid, which already represents 20% of Captur’s sales, here is the simple hybrid which takes over the driveline of the Clio.

With 145 hp under the hood (5 horses were gained during the passage to homologation!), Fruit of the association between a specific 4-cylinder 1.6 liter 16 valves and two electric motors – a high voltage motor and starter – this Captur works well. More than good even, remarkably served by a very advanced robotic clutch transmission. The result of Renault’s experience in Formula 1, it offers no less 15 “virtual” gears, without any skidding effect unlike the continuously variable transmissions that equip most of its competitors. A very rare technology for this transmission which, in addition to its smoothness, is hyper-reactive, almost too much in standard mode where it sometimes tends to increase the engine speed unnecessarily. Suddenly, the sport mode is of little interest, except in really sustained driving. And even. The mode ” Brake »Allows for his regeneration and offers an engine brake that slows the car to around 7 km / h and almost does without the brake pedal. A real plus in urban use. Consumption side, this coupling only required 6.0 liters per 100 km on average, on a mixed city-road course, done at a good pace. A figure that easily falls below the 5.0 liter mark – even below that of 4.5 liters. Note that consumption is not lower in Eco, which drastically restricts performance. As for the mode ” full-electric », It can only cover a maximum of 3 km, without exceeding 65 km / h …

An engine that only enhances the driving pleasure of the Captur

An engine which only reinforces the driving pleasure of the Captur, characterized by a very smooth steering – but a little stingy in sensations – and a very incisive front end. Note that this Captur weighs only 10 kg more than a petrol version while the plug-in hybrid is overweight 210 kg. Made very reassuring by a discreetly understeering trend, the behavior is always so rigorous. Rigor optimized by a very effective damping but the firmness of which weighs on the comfort, in particular on the retarders which, in recent years, have literally invaded our roads. A drought largely offset by excellent seats and which tends to fade as the pace increases. Particularly generous in the rear seats, the roominess, as well as the modularity, are identical to those of the thermal versions, with a sliding rear seat and a trunk which, unlike that of the plug-in hybrid version, does not lose volume. We find with pleasure a design and quality interior materials, with the famous central console “floating” specific to automatic versions, embellished, on this new RS Line finish, by a specific upholstery, an overstitched steering wheel, a carbon “way” decor and an aluminum bottom bracket. A sporty trend finish that, on the outside, is characterized by redesigned shields, with F1 blade at the front (!), And specific aluminum rims. Without forgetting two tailpipes; undoubtedly, marketing makes it possible to swallow everything up! Nevertheless in this high finish, this hybrid Captur is invoiced more than 32 000 €. Although severely watered down here, the famous “Renault Sport” badge is paying dearly for its reputation!

Our verdict

Among the multiple engines offered by the Captur, this “simple” hybrid version is in our opinion one of the most successful insofar as it combines pleasure, performance and fuel economy.
