Toyota
Winner of the last three editions, the Japanese brand is logically favorite. But beware, because the team led by Pascal Vasselon is still in the learning phase with his new car. Responding to the young Hypercar regulations, the GR010 is more massive than the old TS050. The machine adopts a new 3.5-liter V6 and sees its hybrid system now only connected to the front wheels. Reliability remains an unknown, but the Toy ‘will stop at the pits less often than the Alpine. At the wheel, the Toyota workforce is unchanged. Traditionally unlucky in the Sarthe, the crew of number 7 finally intends to triumph. The speed of Mike Conway – author of the best race lap in history in 2019 – could counter the sagacity of the crew of the number 8.

Alpine
Never have the men and women of Philippe Sinault been so close to a victory in the general classification. From now on openly supported by Alpine, the Signatech team, based in Bourges (Cher), moved up to “Ligue 1” this year, taking advantage of the possibility offered by the regulations to enter a former LMP1. the chassis derived from the Oreca 07 has already been successfully tested by the Rebellion team in recent years (2e and 4e places in general in 2020). The machine also remains powered by a 100% thermal 4.5-liter V8, supplied by Gibson. In an edition where reliability could be key, this proven cocktail could make the difference on Sunday at 4 p.m. THE’Nicolas Lapierre’s experience and André Négrão’s cool head will be additional assets. Arrived at the Blues in the spring, Matthieu Vaxiviere has already secured two podiums in LMP2 at Le Mans in the past two years.
Glickenhaus
Former financier, film producer and collector of custom Ferraris, the American James Glickenhaus finally makes his big dream come true. Two cars bearing his name and that of his wife Cameron are entered in the new Hypercar category. The machine molded in the Aosta Valley (Italy) sports a neo-retro look inspired by the Lola T70, and skips hybridization. The thermal block – V8 biturbo of 3.5 liters and 680 hp – is produced by Pipo Moteurs from two in-line 4-cylinders from rallycross. The Ardèche SME used to prepare rally engines for Peugeot, Ford or Hyundai. Despite limited resources, the list of drivers is impressive: double winner of the 24 Hours, Romain Dumas will be the most experienced of the “Glickenhaus boys”. A 30-hour test in Alcañiz (Spain) did not reveal any major concerns, but the prototype remains very green. To cross the checkered flag in front of the best LMP2s would already be an excellent result.
It’s been a long road…
