New Mercedes Citan 2021 – A novice in the field of vans, there are still ten years, Mercedes returns in 2021 with a second generation of Citan, once again developed in collaboration with Renault. Indeed, the German wants to be the close cousin of the Kangoo. Alongside the multiple tolerated variants that will animate its utility range, it lifts the veil on a glazed variant, named Citan Tourer, which will shun the French market, but gives us many indications on the physiognomy of the future Mercedes Class T, the real recreational vehicle of the range, which will be exclusively devoted to private customers.
Soon the hour of T
A little over a year ago, at the end of July 2020, Mercedes already revealed the name of its future MPV. A certain Class T, which will be marketed in a few months, anxious to distance itself from the utility Citan to forge a more rewarding image. Last May, the manufacturer prepared the ground for its future 100% electric derivative, named EQT, in the guise of a spectacular showcar. But the honor goes, for the moment, to the Citan to be revealed to the general public.
More singular style
If the new Mercedes Citan is doing more than its predecessor to stand out from the Renault Kangoo, in terms of style, the fact remains that both share one and the same framework, for the moment. The German lies down on 4,50 m, or a few millimeters more compared to its tricolor counterpart, for aesthetic reasons. It is almost 18 cm more, compared to the old Citan with short chassis, while the rating of empbase is 2.72 m, for a loading compartment length given for 3.05 m.

Deprived of “Sesame”
Professionals will pay attention to the opening surface offered by the sliding doors of the new Mercedes Citan. On each side, access is 1.06 m high and 61.5 cm wide, but the tolerated versions cannot compete with the cousin’s secret boot at the Diamond. Indeed, the Renault Kangoo has the exclusivity of the “Open Sesame” system which eliminates the mid-pillar, on one side, to benefit from a record lateral opening of up to 1.45 m. For the rest, the new Citan offers a loading threshold depth of around 59 cm, and two trunk doors swiveling up to 180 ° and being able to lock up to 90 °. For its part, the Tourer version, close to the future T-Class, has a tailgate. In the coming months, the newcomer will also experience other long wheelbase variants.
A 100% electric variant
Under the hood, the Mercedes Citan comes in 95 and 116 ch diesel, to which is added a 131 hp petrol unit, all combined with a stop & start function. Motorizations available in 6-speed manual transmission and 7-speed DCT dual-clutch automatic on the most powerful engines. The Mercedes T-Class should take some of these characteristics but will also add more punchy blocks. Finally, the second half of 2022 will see the arrival ofa 100% electric variant called eCitan, promising 285 km of autonomy, while waiting for the introduction of his alter ego within the Class T range, referred to as Mercedes EQT.
Improved undercarriages
The new Citan promises improved course holding, relying on a MacPherson type front axle with lower transverse arms, and a rear axle with combined arms separating springs and shock absorbers. Compared to the Renault Kangoo, Mercedes promises specific spring stiffness settings and damping matched to the front and rear axles, while a stabilizer bar reduces body roll.
Exclusive safety equipment
In terms of safety, the new Citan offers itself a latest generation active lane departure assistant, operating on the steering, not the brakes. As standard, it is equipped withhill start assistance, assistance from stabilization in crosswinds and a drowsiness warning system. The Citan Tourer is even more complete, with a active assisted emergency braking, the blind spot assistant and the speed limit assistant, which will inherit the future T-Class. As an option, it is possible to opt for the Active Distronic distance control, which automatically regulates driving in traffic jams, as well as for the active directional assistant. which allows the driver to keep the Citan in the middle of the lane. Finally, the utility of Mercedes is the first in its class to have a central airbag deploying between the front passengers to prevent telescoping. This is one of the specificities of the German compared to the Kangoo.
Like the big ones!
Behind the wheel, the Mercedes Citan presents a different dashboard from that of the Renault, in its upper part. On the tall versions, it can be fitted with certain refinements hitherto reserved for premium sedans in the range, such as the MBUX infotainment system, relayed by a 7 ”diagonal central touch screen, which has a powerful voice assistant on board, and benefits from real-time guidance information via Live traffic and Car-to-X systems to avoid traffic jams.
In mid-September, it will be possible to order the new Mercedes Citan, against less than € 20,000 in base, we are promised. But France will be deprived of the glass Tourer version. To take advantage of a family variant, it will therefore be necessary to wait until the revelation of the Mercedes Class T, in the coming months, followed closely by the EQT, 100% electric.
