Toyota Yaris Cross test: behind the wheel of the hybrid crossover
ADVERTISEMENT

Toyota is finally entering the segment of urban crossovers. With two trumps up its sleeve, a hybrid engine and the choice between 4 × 2 and 4 × 4 transmissions.

With the exception of the C-HR, which is bigger, more expensive and less family-friendly, Toyota was absent from the second largest segment in Europe where French models – Citroën C3 Aircross, Peugeot 2008 and Renault Captur – share the lion’s share. You have to go back to the very beginning of the 2000s to remembera certain Yaris Verso, a microspace that was characterized more by its spaciousness than by its design. If this Cross derives closely from the current and fourth generation of Yaris, it is of course distinguished by its much larger body, which progresses 24 cm in length – at 4.18 m, i.e. the segment average – 2 cm in width and 9.5 cm in height. Its design corresponds to the canons of the segment, with what it takes of originality and elegance. The front is reminiscent of a certain Ford Puma, while the rear assimilates it to its big brother Rav4.

On board with the exception of a specific central console, this Cross shares the dashboard of the Yaris whose quality of finish and presentation is average despite a large number of plastics of different qualities, only a strip in the upper part being foamed. The driving position is pleasantly dominant and ergonomics without reproach while the rear roominess is sufficient for two adults despite limited legroom due to unchanged wheelbase. Unlike the Citroën C3 Aircross and Renault Captur, no trace here of sliding bench due to the installation of the batteries under said bench. As for the trunk, whose tailgate can be motorized, with opening at the foot, its volume of 394 liters places it in the low average of the segment, even if it can reach nearly 1110 liters folded bench backrests (40/60 or 40/20/60). Among the little tips, a 40/60 false boot floor and a flexible rear shelf which can be folded up when removed.

Steering wheel in hand, this Cross is similar to the Yaris.

Steering wheel in hand, this Cross is similar to the Yaris. And for good reason, it takes not only the platform but also the kinematic chain. combining a 1.5-liter Atkinson-cycle 3-cylinder petrol engine with a cumulative electric motor, au total, 116 ch. Unchanged power that reveals itself sufficient thanks to a contained weight, increasing only about 110 kg compared to the Yaris. A mass that benefits consumption with one of the lowest standardized values in the category (4.4 to 5.0 liters per 100 km, for 102 to 110 grams of CO2 per km). We found an average of 5.4 liters of unleaded, knowing that it is easy to go below 5.0 liters. The continuously variable epicyclic gear train transmission still offers great smoothness in town but still requires a little dexterity – or “foot” – on the road in the event of clear acceleration, in order to prevent the mechanics from racing, even if the phenomenon is much less marked than before. But we remain far from the approval of the clutch box of the Renault Captur hybrid, unique in its kind it is true.

Less incisive than that of a Peugeot 2008, its behavior turns out to be as placid as it is reassuring while his comfort remains less soft than that of a Citroën C3 Aircross with a certain firmness with the 18 ” rims, standard on this Haute Collection finish (16 or 17 ” otherwise). Note that this Cross is one of the few urban crossovers to be able to be equipped with an all-wheel drive. (thanks to a second electric motor installed on the rear axle) and the only 4 × 4 hybrid. Beyond its safety equipment (pre-collision and avoidance system with detection of pedestrians and cyclists, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping system, sign reader or even automatic or adaptive management of high beams), it is also the only one in its segment to obtain 5 stars in the EuroNCAP crash test.

Our opinion

If this Yaris Cross is not the most dynamic, the most livable, the most comfortable, or the most efficient urban crossover, it is the most affordable of the hybrids against the Honda Jazz Crosstar, Renault Captur PHEV and other Hyundai Kona Hybrid. And the only 4 × 4 hybrid!
