A few weeks before the opening of the Munich show, Auto-Moto offers you an overview of the novelties that will make their first steps in front of the public.

(Updated on 03/09/2021 at 12:15 p.m.) Munich Motor Show 2021 – The truce was long, but the Motor Shows are finally back in Europe. Replacing the IAA in Frankfurt, condemned by its gigantism, it is in Munich that the planet auto sets its suitcases September 7 to 12. Six days lasting and not ten, as before. Learning from their mistakes, the organizers of the IAA (Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung) wanted a more condensed, more modest, more digital meeting, and above all,
greener than ever.

A main hall, the “Summit”, thus welcomes stands with contained dimensions and bringing together most of the novelties. But, for the first time, the Salon also pushes the walls to take up its quarters in other spaces dedicated to the heart of Munich, such as the “Blue line”, which allows vehicles to be tested with low CO2 emissions. Notable developments which, however, were not enough to convince some manufacturers to join the aisles of the Bavarian Show. This is the case of the group Stellantis, absent from this 2021 edition of the IAA and yet prolific in novelties.

French novelties

No need, therefore, to look for the Peugeot 308, recently renewed, and its version SW, or the new Opel Astra, unveiled a few weeks earlier and praised by the press and the public. However, this first edition keeps its promises in terms of new features. The French presence is ensured by the Renault Group. Dacia thus takes advantage of the Bavarian meeting to reveal a new 7-seater station wagon version of the Sandero, called Jogger, enthroned on the stand alongside the Freshly restyled “classic” duster. The MeganE, electric crossover unveiled a few months ago in the form of a concept very close to reality, it acts as the headliner of the diamond manufacturer. Finally, visitors can approach the Renault 5 Prototype, a 100% electric style study, which will be launched by 2024.

Audi news

Playing at home, the German brands are mainly represented. Among the models most popular with visitors, we can mention the very new Audi RS 3, formalized a few weeks earlier, which covers a now complete range. With 400 hp from its in-line 5-cylinder engine, the sporty compact comes standard with a dual-clutch and seven-speed gearbox, Quattro all-wheel drive, widened tracks and an active rear differential. Attractive attire to say the least, despite an entry ticket displayed at € 70,000. The builder with the rings also presents the concept-car Audi Grandsphere, foreshadowing the replacement of the A8 in electric version.

New BMW and Mini

For its part, BMW is continuing its electric offensive, like thei4, available in two power levels, 340 and 544 hp, or even SUV iX3, on the occasion of restyling of the X3 / X4 range. Without forgetting the scooter CE 04, heir to the C-Evolution, as well as a concept of 100% electric minivan … 100% recyclable, called i Vision Circular. Hydrogen is also in the spotlight with a iX5 demonstrator close to production, promised for the end of 2022. On a purely thermal level, the new 2 Series Coupé, 4 Series Gran Coupé and M3 Cabriolet ensure the show. For its part, Mini, owned by BMW, finally materializes its concept-car Urbanaut, revealed digitally last year.

New Mercedes and Smart

At Mercedes, the program is loaded, with new Citan utility and you EQT electric minivan concept ensuing. The latter rubs shoulders with the unprecedented EQE sedan, electric version of the E-Class and one of the stars of this edition, based on the platform of the new EQS. A limousine that comes in Munich in the form ofan SUV in the state of showcar, and stamped Maybach. The star brand also presents the new EQB, an electrical derivative of the GLB, as well as the Classe C All-Terrain, adventurous variant of the new D-segment station wagon. We are also waiting, a certain EQG, which promises to be the 100% electric variant of the legendary G-Class. On the AMG side, the highlight of the show is the electrified version of the AMG-GT4 which develops more than 800 hp. At last, Smart reveals concept car announcing all-new SUV called to play the stars.

Porsche news

At Porsche, honor goes to the 911, and more particularly to 992 GTS et GT3. But the Zuffenhausen firm relies above all on an avalanche of SUVs, embodied by the Cayenne Turbo GT of 640 hp, the restyled Macan family, as well as a study foreshadowing the future 100% electric Macan.

Volkswagen news

For its part, Volkswagen, installed in a small stand in the heart of the Summit enclosure, relies mainly on electricity, giving pride of place to a concept heralding a future “ID” badged city car, scheduled to hit the road for 2025. TheID.5 GTX is also part of the game, but in a camouflaged version. It is a SUV Coupe with a plunging roof, which should be able to travel 500 km thanks to its 77 kWh battery and its engine delivering 299 hp. However, the new range Restyled polo shirt is not forgotten, including the turbulent GTI, just like the new Multivan T7, now hybridized.

Who’s new elsewhere?

The Cupra brand, belonging to the Volkswagen group, presents for the first time to the public its electric born compact, technical cousin of the Volkswagen ID.3. It is accompanied by UrbanRebel concept car foreshadowing the electric city car expected in 2025, as well as under the Seat label. If the German brands are logically the majority in Munich, let us note however the Ford presence, despite the dire lack of a world premiere on its stand. Visitors will be more interested in the electrical novelties of Hyundai (Ioniq 5 and Sportage) and Kia (EV6), or by the Microline. Of Swiss origin, and inspired by the legendary Isetta, this 100% electric ultra-urban unveils its final production model for the first time.
