Barely unveiled that the new Kia Sportage must come up against a strong opponent: the Peugeot 3008. And the battle promises to be fierce.
Since the arrival of its 2nd generation, in 2016, the Peugeot 3008 has succeeded in putting down most of its rivals, thus chaining successes and no longer leaving the top 10 of the best-selling models in France. And the arrival of restyling over the past year has not really helped the business of its competitors, as the SUV is still on top, leading the segment sales in the territory, with more than 31 000 copies sold since the beginning of the year. Except here it is, the star of the lion brand may have to put his crown on the line, as rivals from Korea want to steal him. After the Hyundai Tucson, it is the turn of the new Kia Sportage to tackle this mission. And the least we can say is that on paper, its strengths are numerous. To the point of dethroning the lioness? This is what we tried to find out by opposing them.
Two design ideas
Until now, Kia was not necessarily known for its style, which tended to be very versatile, without being disagreeable to the eye. But for some time now, designers have given a new lease of life to the brand, offering it more assertive features, as is the case with this new Sportage. At the risk of falling into caricature? Maybe, but the fact is, this new generation is far from going unnoticed, with its large grille and boomerang lights. To tell the truth, the Peugeot 3008 would almost become a wise little cat next door, that’s to say! Because if some criticized the lion brand for its style a little too aggressive and sometimes bling-bling, the Sochaux SUV is however more conventional than its rival. So it’s up to you to choose from two models with a very strong character.
On board, very similar services
As with the exterior styling, the interiors of these two SUVs actually have a lot in common, both offering a very modern presentation. And this despite the relatively advanced age of the Peugeot 3008, which benefits from a slightly revised dashboard with restyling, allowing it to stay in the race. Both highly technological, the rivals also offer a beautiful interior space, while their wheelbase is displayed at 2.68 meters for each of them. The Kia Sportage is however distinguished on the side of the trunk, with a volume oscillating between 591 and 1,780 liters, against 520 to 1,670 for the lioness. The differences are therefore very minimal between the French and the Korean, but there is no doubt that the latter will have no trouble competing with the star of the segment, thanks in part to its beautiful technological endowment, including among others a brand new central airbag. , as well as an anti-collision device to prevent collisions in intersections.
Electrification in force
Taking the technical basis of the new Hyundai Tucson, this Kia Sportage logically inherits its engines. The range therefore consists of a four-cylinder petrol engine of 150 horsepower as well as a diesel developing 136 equines, both equipped with a 48-volt light hybridization system. To this is added a simple hybrid version of 230 horsepower, as well as a rechargeable version, thus displaying a total power of 265 horses. At Peugeot, no simple hybrid or mild-hybrid, while the catalog leaves the choice between a PureTech 130 petrol and a diesel BlueHDi of the same power, as well as two plug-in hybrids, 225 and 300 horsepower. The choice will then be made according to the desired power, and the type of electrification you prefer. Note that the two SUVs are available in manual or automatic gearbox depending on the engine.
The price match
For now, the prices of new Kia Sportage have not yet been unveiled, but these should start around € 30,000, with a series endowment which has not been specified. For its part, the Peugeot 3008 is displayed from 32,450 €, including the City Pack, automatic dual-zone air conditioning or central locking of the doors with remote control. It will then be necessary to go for a finish a little more upscale to take advantage of a more extensive list of equipment. It remains to be seen whether its Korean rival will be more generous on this point, the firm being precisely known for offering many standard items, even on the lowest levels.
