Subaru unveils the 5th generation of its WRX, strong of 275 horses but which will unfortunately not be sold with us.
Car that became iconic after rally fans and a direct descendant of the mythical Impreza, the Subaru WRX has become over the years an essential model, after more than twenty years of existence. If the sedan is still a great success abroad, and in particular in the United States, it unfortunately ceased to be marketed here, and this since 2018, year in which it benefited from a slight restyling. Present in the brand’s catalog since 2014 already, this Subaru WRX therefore still needs a little facelift, and therefore offers itself a fifth generation, which evolves without embodying a real revolution. There is no question for the brand to change too much a recipe that is already working well, which would then risk destabilizing customers. However, if the sedan would look almost like two drops of old-fashioned water, you will find that the different ones are quite noticeable.
And for good reason, when we look at the lines of this new Subaru WRX, these seem very close to the old version, launched seven years ago already. However, the designers wanted to give it a more modern look, by slightly modifying the design of the grille, now enlarged, as well as the air intake installed on the hood. The lights are thinner, giving more character to the car, while the widened fenders help to give it presence. The rear, on the other hand, changes more radically, both in terms of the fires and the shield. The interior has also benefited from major changes, with a completely revised presentation, offering a new 11.6-inch vertical touch screen, while the meters seem to remain analog. The dashboard is largely modernized compared to the old version, although the whole remains quite classic.
Retained power
Under the hood, too, it’s not really time for a revolution. However, the engine Boxer of the old generation has indeed been reworked, with a displacement from 2.0 to 2.4 liters, then developing a total power of 275 horsepower, three more than before, for a torque of 350 Nm. The assembly is then sent to the four wheels via a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox, as well as an Active Torque Vectoring system. Based on the Subaru Global modular platform, this new WRX is also available with piloted suspension, for increased comfort and efficiency. This all new generation of the Subaru WRX will be marketed in the United States from next year. On the other hand, it will therefore not make the trip to our country, while the brand still remains very confidential on the French and European market.
