Microsoft is continuing its project which aims to secure accounts by means that are safer and easier for users. Now, the firm is extending to the general public the possibility of completely removing the password from their Microsoft account.

For Microsoft, the password is the weak point of online account security. Often too simple, too easy to guess, and too complicated to remember, Microsoft has simply decided to do without it. Now users of Microsoft personal accounts will be able to delete it and use theapplication Microsoft Authenticator, Windows Hello, a security key or code received by email, or SMS.
This is a long-term project which had notably started with Windows Hello, which allows you to connect to Windows 10 without using your password, with a PIN code, a digital print, or facial recognition. This time, Microsoft is not talking about bypassing the password, but rather removing it entirely, a step already taken for business accounts in March.
The password, a security breach?
By switching to an account without a password, it will suffice to approve any new connection to the account on the mobile application without having to memorize any information. This will prevent any phishing or ” password spraying Where hackers try all the most common passwords to access the account.
Users who want to get rid of their sesame will first need to download the app Microsoft Authenticator and link it to their Microsoft account. Then, you will have to connect to your account on account.microsoft.com. The option “Account without password” can be found in “Security”, then “Advanced security options”. Finally, it will be enough to approve the modification in the application Microsoft Authenticator. It will of course be possible to go back and recreate a password later.
