After a somewhat disappointing GT Sport, the Gran Turismo series returns at the start of the year on PS4 and PS5, with an opus more complete than ever! Place to test with the strengths and weaknesses of the game.
The famous racing game exclusive to the PlayStation is making a comeback! Grand Touring 7developed and published by the studios Polyphony Digital for the PS4 and PS5, offers us a return to basics. Something to make fans of the series somewhat nostalgic. The rewind sequence begins with the return of the World’s map which acts as the main menu for navigating between races and continues with the Concessionsthe Garagethe GT Auto. Small addition: the Café, where we discover the missions to be carried out.
Major developments
We note a certain graphic evolution on our PS4 version but not blatantly compared to Gran Turismo Sport released in 2017. The game is beautiful, the vehicles successful and it is in the details that this 13th installment in the series makes the difference. The main improvements are in the visual effects, especially with the play of light, reflections and particularly at night or during changing conditions (appearance of clouds and rain). It is important to note that the technology Ray Tracing (management of photorealistic visual effects), available on the PS5, is not used permanently. The latter is only activated during race replays or in the mode photo.
Our test was carried out on the version PS4, which has nothing to be ashamed of graphically speaking. The finesse of the visual effects and the fluidity of the images which are linked to the screen is less than on the big sister, PS5. But’immersion and driving pleasure are present enough that we do not notice a big difference. At this level, it is a successful challenge in thegraphic adaptability of Gran Turismo 7 between the two generations of consoles. The PS4 version is doing well, except for one small detail. The loading times are quite long. It is therefore necessary to be patient before being able to attack the bitumen.
The game’s physics, on the other hand, allow PS4 players to not feel a gap with the next gen version. The physical evolutions are felt in the very essence of driving, in the behavior of the vehicles, or even in the grip changes. The approach to a bend is not the same on dry or wet asphalt. We clearly have the impression of being on a thread all the time and the error does not forgive. Same observation on dirt circuits where it will be important to anticipate your trajectories as well as possible to recover maximum grip when exiting corners. From that side, the game is rather impressive and even impressive. Particularly during the first rounds of wheels where we are clearly surprised. This Gran Turismo really acts as driving simulation open to all and brings out the driver in you!
Diverse and varied content
On to the content! In this Gran Turismo 7, the challenges are up to the most competitive. The more you advance in the game, the more you feel the difficulty. Before embarking on the adventure, you have to be ready to put your ego aside, to start the same challenge a multitude of times. And as a result, the game pushes us to seek all the gold medals in exchange for some generosity. The rewards are important, with countless vehicles up for grabs. We even come to wonder what the concession is for?
As in the first opuses, it will be necessary to pass the driver’s license at the start of the game. The latter acts as tutorial to learn to drive the many vehicles, each more powerful than the other and on the circuits offered. Trajectory, braking, acceleration or even dosage, the margin of progress is perceptible through the challenges, to the point of forgetting that we are sitting on our sofa rather than in a tub. To do this, the game is punctuated by a well-balanced ride between arcade and simulation. The mix is perfect so that everyone can find their account (controller or steering wheel, simulation enthusiasts or occasional player). To do this, driving aids play an important role in driving but also in the most total immersion.
The basis of the game then focuses around the iconic Café ! The owner, Luca, will welcome you very kindly in his establishment. You will receive a menu book in which there are 39 challenges. The objective is to discover and expand a collection of vehicles who marked the history of the automobile. The game is a real encyclopedia. The developers and creator of the series, Kazunori Yamauchiare passionate and it shows!
To break this routine, GT7 also offers the mode mission challenge. The latter brings the dose of fun necessary to get out of the seriousness of motor racing, through new challenges : drag race, smashing blocks or even covering the longest distance aboard a Bugatti Chiron with an empty tank! And finally come the endurance races that we had missed so much. It is important to note that the next updates will bring additional challenges to the mission challenge, such as the famous Le Mans 24 hour race. Also count on the new game mode Rallye Musicalto evolve on the tracks with surprising vehicles to the rhythm of iconic music, in addition to the essential split screen mode.
Although a Gran Turismo game has never offered such a grand panel de circuit, we do not find anything very new. All the circuits have been brought up to date since the old opuses, with new configurations. As a reminder, they are not all available from the start of the game. You will have to advance through the missions to unlock all the tracks offered by the game.
As to vehiclesthe modeling work and attention to detail bodies, interiors, engine noises and the behavior of each vehicle are impressive. The Polyphony Digital teams are experts in the field and it’s a 10/10. It will even take you some time to simply observe the silhouette of the cars of your dreams as the details are breathtakingly realistic.
The same for the mechanical part and car tuning. It will be important to take care of your vehicles in GT7, otherwise they will deteriorate. If you don’t regularly check your cars by doing an oil change for example, well you will lose some horsepower to wear. It’s that kind of details that pushes the series to its climax in Gran Turismo 7. Not to mention the multitude of settings and customization available. No disappointment there!
Add to all this the next updatesregular, which will bring vehicles, races, additional challenges, not to mention the new artificial intelligence Sophy. This Gran Turismo 7 does not surprise in its innovation but rather in the level of detail achieved. The Polyphony Digital studios have pushed their know-how to the limit, to offer us a complete game, which offers breathtaking immersion. The sensations are there and quite satisfying enough to become addicted to Gran Turismo.
