The contours of the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship season are starting to be defined. Indeed, the revelation of a first version of the official calendar reports 23 dates, concentrated from March to November. Initially, the 2021 financial year also provided for 23 rounds, but the health crisis is on the way to reduce this total to 22. However, this constitutes a record, exceeding the threshold of 21 Grands Prix reached three times in recent years ( 2016, 2018 and 2019).
Therefore, at the end of the 2022 vintage, a new benchmark in this area will be established, provided that the 23 race course is maintained. But more than the number of Grands Prix contested in the same season, it is the density of this calendar that challenges. The end of the championship deadline being reduced from December to November, the 23 Grands Prix in question are gathered over a period of barely eight months. Thus, we identify the trifle of three triplets, in other words three series of races over three consecutive weekends, all gathered from early July to early October. As for the simple sequences over two weekends in a row, they are five in number.
In 2022, it is important to note that the French public is not sure of benefiting from its national Grand Prix. Indeed, to date, the meeting organized on the Paul Ricard circuit would be in direct competition with its Italian counterpart Imola, theater for two seasons of the Grand Prix of Emilia-Romagna. In any case, if the balance tips in its favor, the Grand Prix of France is expected to abandon its usual June slot. According to the first version of this calendar, the next edition would be credited with the date of July 17.
The championship will kick off twice in the Middle East, starting with the Grand Prix opening planned in Bahrain, next March 20. A week later, heading for the circuit of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, which will soon celebrate its debut in F1 as the penultimate event of the 2021 season. In April, we note the return of two rounds, the last edition of which dates back to 2019, namely Australia and China . In addition, the major novelty of the 2022 financial year concerns the introduction of the Miami Grand Prix, on May 8. From then on, there will be two races organized on US soil, a first since 1984.
No surprises at the height of the season, with the expected return of the Canadian Grand Prix, June 19. For the rest, we find all the usual European events, until the end of the summer. At the beginning of October, a meeting to be defined between Singapore and Turkey will be followed by the emblematic trip to the Suzuka 8 circuit in Japan. The end of the season will have an American accent for three reasons, with the United States Grand Prix in Austin, then those of Mexico and Brazil. As for the final round, it is scheduled in Abu Dhabi, on November 20, or exactly eight months after the start of the season. This provisional calendar will have to be approved at a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council (CMSA) of the International Automobile Federation (FIA).
