In 2020, the motorcycle speed world championship had took on the appearance of a European championship. Indeed, due to the travel limitations inherent in the Covid-19 pandemic, the Old Continent had the exclusive right to organize the 14 Grand Prix in the premier category, of which 7 had taken place in Spain. A year later, the situation having changed little, the discipline still had to deal with many cancellations American, Asian and Oceanic events. To date, 15 of the 18 races of 2021 are associated with the European continent, the exceptions being the double opening round held in Qatar and the Austin event in the United States scheduled for early October.
After two seasons disrupted by the pandemic, the MotoGP caravan intends to once again put its wheels on the ground of all its usual destinations. For 2022, the conviction of a return to normal results in a particularly busy provisional calendar, rich in 21 Grands Prix, never seen before. So far, the discipline has never exceeded the threshold of 19 races in a single season, a record total reached twice, in 2018 and 2019. Initially, the current exercise relied on the organization of 20 events before resolving to reduce this total to 18, due to the health crisis.
While the fate of the Formula 1 French Grand Prix is uncertain, in competition with his Italian counterpart Imola, that of his MotoGP alter ego is well secured. After a last minute postponement in 2020, in October, the French motorcycle GP had regained its usual niche, the following year, in mid-May. It is therefore not surprising to find that the next edition of the race organized on the Bugatti circuit in Le Mans will take place in the heart of spring. The next French Motorcycle Grand Prix is scheduled for Sunday May 15, 2022. For now, the opening date of the ticket office is not known.
Without surprise, the championship will kick off in Qatar on March 6. After planned trips to Indonesia, Argentina and the United States, the European tour will begin with the Portuguese Grand Prix on April 24. On July 10, the discipline plans to compete in a race in Finland for the first time since 1982. Initially, the event run on the KimyRing should have been named in 2020, but the vagaries of the health crisis had finally jeopardized the validation of the approval of this spectacular circuit.
The series of twelve consecutive races on the Old Continent will be concluded by the Grand Prix of San Marino on September 18. It must be followed by four extra-European trips, to Japan, Thailand, Australia and Malaysia. Like Qatar in opening, the final round is a classic of the last years, since it must be held on the Ricardo Tormo track of Valencia in Spain, November 13. Obviously, due to the health crisis, this calendar is provisional and it will have to be confirmed at the end of the year by the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM).
