With sales down 19.53% compared to last year, the French automobile market is literally in freefall.
To say it’s bad is an understatement. If for two years now, sales of new cars have collapsed, due in particular to the crisis linked to the Covid-19, things haven’t really improved. Worse still, the situation has even deteriorated, for many different reasons. First, the shortage of semiconductors, which lengthens production and delivery times, but also the war in Ukraine, which has led to problems with the supply of parts as well as the closure of factories, in Russia in particular. In short, the situation is very difficult for the automobile industry, which is bearing the brunt of the crisis.
Falling sales
No wonder sales are plummeting, while the purchasing power of the French has also melted like snow in the sun in recent months. Consequently, the registration fell 19.53% in March compared to the same month last year. In total, only 147,079 cars were sold, a figure close to the level seen in the 1970s, when the automobile industry was significantly less developed.
Unsurprisingly, it is the generalist manufacturers who are the most affected, and in particular Stellantis and Renault, with sales down by around 30% and 15% respectively. Nevertheless, on the side of Korea, things are going rather well, while the Kia-Hyundai group sees its registrations climb by 4.26%. However, the prize goes to Bentley, whose sales have literally soared, with an increase of 150%.
