A priori, our job as a journalist does not consist of give our opinion on the design models tried. Even in extreme cases. Even there.
You will therefore not read any judgment on the divisive aspect of the new iX, on the potential ugliness of its monolithic facies, nor any opinion on the alleged harmony of its disturbing features.
Nothing at all, either, on the beaver teeth that serve as a grille. Everyone’s taste is different.
It is up to us, on the other hand, to approach its interior presentation and the comfort of its interior, which have the advantage of forgetting the bodywork.
Overhung by a huge curved slab, the structural and sleek dashboard is dressed in a covering made from recycled materials.
We could regret the imperfect driving position and the steering wheel whose hexagonal shape remains questionable, but the architecture has its effect and the iX rethinks the interior ergonomics, with beautiful ideas and a generally intuitive interface.
The seat adjustment buttons, positioned on the storm doors – as in Mercedes – have a diamond look, like the multimedia system dial which rests on a tactile wooden pad.
The whole, like the choice of colors, will be talked about, but that does not spoil the feeling of space and well-being on board.
Same thing at the back, where we can travel with a hat and extend the legs, and where the absence of a servo tunnel offers real freedom of movement. This detail is made possible by the philosophy of this strange SUV: it is an electric “car”.
To listen to its parents, it is even THE electric car; the one who has first fifth generation engines and launch a platform dedicated to electric mobility.
The one who innovates at all levels, integrates 5G and performs remote updates – as at Tesla – and the one that becomes the flagship of the “battery-powered” range.
The iX also puts the package on the equipment, in particular with a regenerative braking (adjustable according to three modes) which “Reads” the road and adapts to traffic, at intersections and roundabouts or at traffic signs and lights, in order to anticipate and autonomously carry out an appropriate slowdown, without jerking.
In xDrive50 version, with a motor (integrated in a housing also grouping the transmission and power electronics) on each axle, for a cumulative power of 385 kW (524 hp), what an SUV made in Germany delivers mind-boggling performance despite its appalling weight.
He takes advantage of a pneumatic controlled suspension, is comfortable and always efficient, but quite placid despite its rear steering wheels. Its 2.6 tons inevitably end up being noticed when the pace increases.
BMW is however proud to evoke the design of its chassis, produced heavily reinforced with aluminum and carbon fiber mixed with plastic, the structure of which weighs 50 kg less than that of an X5, of similar dimensions. But that doesn’t make it a featherweight.
Among the refreshing innovations (we didn’t say essential …), the iX boasts a self-regenerating muzzle: the polyurethane material of the grille, which has a heating system dedicated to the radar and the camera it houses, takes advantage of the heat released to regenerate itself.
The impacts of chippings and other unwelcome scratches are expected disappear on their own, as if by magic.
We also find on board a maneuver recording system : all you have to do is carry out the delicate parking in your car park yourself and memorize it in the device so that the iX can reproduce it the next time.
This will be done without any effort on your part, neither to turn the steering wheel nor to engage forward gear or reverse gear while parking. Ten maneuvers, operated at a maximum speed of 1 meter per second, can be recorded.
No miracle, however, when recharging the battery: the electricity always passes through a cable, which must be connected yourself.
With a 200 kW load power accepted on a fast terminal, the iX can see its “filling” level drop from 10 to 80% in thirty-five minutes.
But to cover all of its capacity from an 11 kW terminal, which can be installed at home, it takes eleven hours.
The battery integrated into the chassis, net capacity of 105.2 kWh, is capable according to BMW, and under optimal conditions, of driving this SUV for more than 600 kilometers.
A journey always traveled in peace and comfort, not in discretion: during our test carried out in Bavaria, on BMW land, the machine made all heads go unscrewed in its path. Some of them displaying a surprised look …
BMW iX test – our opinion:
Strange and original in form, yet warm and luxurious, the iX was designed, according to BMW, “from the inside out”, starting with the passenger compartment. Like the Renault Vel Satis. We wish the German a more glorious career than that of the great French road …
- Presentation and ergonomics
- Performance and autonomy
- Innovative equipment
We like less
- Very sharp design
- Obviously elitist price
- Very heavy weight
