While the traditional “owl” will retire, another more powerful mobile radar is about to take over.
We could talk about radars all day long, there is so much to say about them. And for good reason, our government spends several thousand euros each year for the deployment and maintenance of these machines, which are supposed to improve the road safety. In 2020, no less than 330 billion were invested in this area, whether as part of the modernization of the fleet of radars or in “program support”, including among others various experiments and varied. In short, it’s a lot of money, but it also pays very big. In 2020, no less than 550 billion euros will have been collected by the State. It is certainly less than some previous years, but it proves that this business remains extremely profitable all the same. Enough to be able to invest, in particular in the development of new, even more efficient devices.
After the turret radar and its miniature version dedicated to built-up areas, another type of radar will be making its first steps on the roadside in the coming years. At first glance, this one will look like the famous “owl”, nickname given to the Cities 210C, who is about to retire after more than 14 years of loyal service. And of course, this one will not leave a vacuum for very long, as our colleagues from Radars-Auto.com. It will indeed be replaced by a model that is obviously more efficient, but above all more versatile, since it will in particular be able to verbalize from the top of the decks, which was not possible before, except with the famous and much feared binoculars. But these must then be necessarily held by the police, which is obviously less practical, thus mobilizing more staff. This new radar can then be simply placed, then quietly flashing speeding motorists.
Commissioned in two years
To tell the truth, we know for the moment quite little about the technical specifications of this new verbalization device, but according to our first information, it will be able in particular to identify which vehicle is at fault in the flow of the motorway. He will also be able to tell the difference between still a light vehicle and a heavy-duty vehicle and will be able to control the speed, of course, but also not wearing a seat belt or crossing a continuous line. Of course, it can also be installed in the trunk of a car and serve as an on-board radar, or on a tripod installed on the side of the road. However, you will still be able to drive quietly for a while, since this new radar should not arrive on the roads until at least 2023. And for good reason, the public deployment market has not yet been announced, and it will still take a long time for this new device to be developed and made operational.
