Although a priori the 911 GTS is once again akin to a Carrera S cleverly loaded with options, it would in practice strive to further mark its difference. So let’s play.
Controlled damping, chassis lowered by 10 mm, Chrono pack, sports exhaust… Once again, Porsche cannot deny it. Much of the alleged specifics of the 911 Carrera GTS are actually mere options already accessible to a more humble and discreet Carrera S. As if this were only a way for the brand to encourage its customers to consume and to extract from them more than 18 000 € additional, in exchange for a sportiness so- saying exacerbated.
Take to the hilly roads around Verona at the wheel of a Cabriolet version, then by opening the circuit of the Porsche Experience Center in Franciacorta to that of a coupé, the good marketing stunt nevertheless struggles to explain everything; this surplus of bestiality of the engine, precision of the chassis, in short, of the personality of this umpteenth member of the great 911 family.
The GTS still gives way in some ways to ease. But it also reserves real technical differences. Like its 6-cylinder 3.0 biturbo whose power climbs by 30 hp and torque by 40 Nm. An increase of breath obtained thanks to a boost pressure raised from 1.17 to 1.33 bar and to a cooling notably improved by a specific rear shield, more widely ventilated.
Difficult to physically appreciate the gain in acceleration. The 450 hp of a Carrera S already manifested itself in a virile way in the small of the back. More flagrant than the 3 tenths grappled at 0 to 100 km / h according to the Zuffenhausen firm, the “turbo” effect more marked in the first half of the tachometer, then the more buzzing tone than usual in the second undeniably benefit from the impression of leading a separate version.
This closer sound proximity is not just a sight of the mind caused by the contact of the suede on the palms or the sight of the letters GTS embroidered on the headrests. This “nine-eleven” gets rid of 1.5 kg of soundproofing for the occasion. Even an additional 1.5 kg by opting for a “lightweight” pack which, in addition to lightening your wallet by just under € 10,000 (its exact price is not yet known at the time of writing), promises to reduce the total weight of this sports car of 25 kg. It includes, among other things, a lithium-ion battery, the omission of the two rear seats, lightened windows and the brilliant carbon-reinforced plastic bucket seats for unwavering support.
Before we get there, there are other ways to promote the interaction between man and machine. Like leaning for the mechanical box. This is one of the few free options, it would be a shame to go without.
Although shortened by 10mm to gain speed, its control does not quite have the magic of that of a GT3. The presence of a 7th gear makes its handling less instinctive in the right half of the grid. However, facing its robotic counterpart PDK, flawless although tending to smooth the motor character by its clinical dazzling, this transmission makes the slightest trip infinitely more entertaining. And more demanding track driving.
That said, the GTS pushes the boundaries of an already well-born 992 generation a little further. And having to momentarily hold the steering wheel with one hand allows you to better measure the added value of your label. The stiffness increased by about 30% of its springs adds a little stability under braking, although this one gains in bite and in power with the adoption of the large discs of the Turbo.
The Gran Turismo Sport is also inspired by its glorious predecessor by equipping its rear axle with a pair of additional springs to facilitate the work of the rebound dampers. Whether on an impeccable track or the bumps of the secondary transalpine network, it becomes very difficult to overcome. You really have to exaggerate to overcome its traction, automatically reinforced by a self-locking (controlled in the presence of the PDK box or mechanical with manual). Imposed on the Targa body, all-wheel drive seems more than ever superfluous.
In our view, the steered rear wheels, which promote lightning-fast changes of course in winding winds as well as confidence in large, fast curves, offer a better compromise between efficiency and pleasure. In the same vein, active roll control guarantees solid downforce when cornering without too much degrading comfort everywhere else. Too bad the choice of this GTS version does not change the fact that it is necessary to go through the options to benefit from these refinements. It must be admitted that on this point, it unfortunately remains a 911 among many others.
Our verdict
The 992 GTS has the delicious flavor of a little Turbo with a few drops of GT3 in it. Alas, in exchange once again for supplements as numerous as they are expensive.
WE love
- Reinforced motor character
