Despite two electric models in its catalog, Buick is struggling in China. The new crossover must rectify the situation and will resume the historic name Electra.
The oldest American car brand in operation, Buick was saved in the early 2000s by its presence in the Chinese market. Long a subscriber to the sales podium, Buick has slowly slipped in recent years to finish 7e sales in 2021 and a market share below 4%.
The situation is especially critical on the electricity market. The Velite6 and Velite7 accounted for less than 25,000 units last year. Buick thus occupied only 0.75% of electric sales in China.
GM is therefore preparing to launch a new generation of electric cars in China. The group has already communicated widely on the GMC Hummer, the Cadillac Lyriq, the Chevrolet Silverado, Equinox or Blazer. Buick will logically not stay on the side of the road and is preparing to present a new electric crossover.
It will very appropriately take up the historic name of Electra, which did not designate an electric car when it debuted in 1959. A version close to the series will be presented soon. It will be a streamlined crossover as announced by the Electra concept in 2020. The final version will be unveiled at the end of the year for marketing in early 2023.
