As temperatures begin to drop, discover our tips for storing your summer tires properly during the winter.
That’s it, temperatures are dropping, and bad weather is making a comeback. It’s official, we are indeed in autumn, with all its specificities, especially for motorists, between the rain and the darkness which falls earlier and earlier, not to mention the drop in temperatures. This is particularly why from next November 1, and until March 31, no less than 48 departments will make winter tires compulsory for motorists. These will then have to equip their vehicle with specific rubber, bearing the M + S logo or better, the initials 3PMSF, associated with the alpine symbol, consisting of a snowflake and a three-peaked mount. It will also be possible to install only chains or socks, provided that they are installed at least on the driving wheels of the vehicle. All-season tires will also be accepted, provided they bear the aforementioned markings, in order to guarantee optimum grip on snow and ice.
Optimal conditions
For several months, you will therefore have to do without your summer tires. But where to store them so that they do not deteriorate? If possible, avoid storing them in a room in your home, where heat as well as your daily activities could damage them. Overall, the tires are not designed to be stored for a long period of time, and the conditions in which they are must therefore be optimal in order to avoid irreversible damage. The ideal is therefore to store them in a place sheltered from daylight, ventilated and at low temperature. A cave is therefore perfect if you have one, but avoid the garage, which suffers large variations depending on the time of day and the weather. Of course, do not store your tires outdoors, which could damage them for a long time. On the other hand, you can pack your gums separately in plastic gardening bags, in order to protect them from dust.
Always remember to store your tires on the sidewall and definitely do not stack them. Tires mounted on rims can also be suspended. Remember to turn the wheels regularly, so that they do not sag, a flattening of more than six months then causing irreparable damage to the tires. If your tires are installed on a vehicle, it is best to install shims, in order to reduce pressure and weight. If this is not possible, increase the pression 25% and move the car every three months.
