To better prepare for its transition to the electric car, Jaguar Land Rover could decide to manufacture its own batteries in the United Kingdom.

JLR’s parent firm, Tata Motors, has engaged in a standoff with the British government. The issue of these negotiations is the construction of a battery factory for electric cars. The group wants to hit hard in the coming years and quickly move to “zero emissions”.

The group identified two potential sites that could serve as the basis for this brand new infrastructure. Tata Motors wants to win its case and has even threatened the government to relocate its production.

The ministers in charge of this negotiation have for the moment minimized the risk of seeing this happen. It would seem that they are right, since JLR also assured that this threat does not exist.

The first possible location for this factory is in the county of Somerset. The future Gravity Business Park attracts automakers, since Tesla and Rivian had already considered it.

The other site is in Yorkshire, in Redcar, at a place called Teesworks. Jaguar Land Rover explains in any case its desire to remain in the United Kingdom, despite Brexit.

“With our strategy to make every JLR model available as all-electric by the end of the decade, we will keep our production and assembly plants in our UK and worldwide market”explained a spokesperson.

Jaguar Land Rover does not rule out using a subcontractor either. The firm “continue to explore all battery supply options. No decision has been made”, concludes the spokesperson. Nevertheless, it could be that the final agreement arrives before the end of June.
