Researchers used artificial intelligence to analyze more than 100,000 studies on climate change. They were thus able to determine that climate change already affects 85% of the world’s population.

1is November begins the Glasgow conference on climatic changes COP26. The effects of dysregulation weather are more and more apparent, but a new study has provided some figures. Researchers from Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change have used artificial intelligence for a meta-analysis. The article was published in the journal Nature Climate Change.

Scientists used machine learning, based on the Bert language model, to identify and analyze a total of 102,160 empirical studies on various topics such as migration of butterflies, human deaths linked to heat or even the evolutions forests. They divided the world into a grid and noted, from the location of the studies, whether each grid experienced phenomena that exceed natural variability. They were thus able to create a synthesis with extensive data on changes in temperature and precipitation.

A phenomenal increase in the number of studies over the past five years

The results indicate that climatic changes attributable to human activity are felt over 80% of the earth’s surface, affecting 85% of the world’s population. ” Our study leaves no doubt that the climate crisis is already being felt almost everywhere in the world. It is also widely documented scientifically ”Said Max Callaghan who conducted the study.

The researchers had to call on artificial intelligence to deal with all the recent literature on the subject, which has become too voluminous to be directly studied by specialists. According to Max Callaghan, 75,000 to 85,000 studies have been published in the past five years, compared to just 1,500 articles from 1951 to 1990. The article points out, however, that the majority of studies are in rich countries, with little data from countries. developing, especially in Africa.
