Toyota RAV4 Trail (2022) TEST: rugged look and 4×4 transmission
ADVERTISEMENT

The hybrid SUV plays it more 4×4 in the soul and on the technical level. We took the wheel of the Toyota RAV4 Trail. Here is our verdict.

ESSAI Toyota RAV4 Trail (2022) – Discover our notebook of the “adventurous” variant of the RAV4 which benefits from new stylistic finery to move away from the world of SUVs and assert itself a little more like a 4×4. Strengths, weaknesses, technical sheet…

What is it about ?

Not really a restyling, it is rather the introduction in Europe of a version already marketed in other latitudes, since the launch of the current RAV4, in 2018. It is offered from €50,950, i.e. a few hundred euros below the top-of-the-range finish called Collection.

Interior

Finishing : robust in appearance, with fairly homogeneous materials, unlike many Japanese. Orange stitching that struggles to distinguish this Trail finish from the rest of the range.

Position and ergonomics: pleasant driving position, correct ergonomics with very significant massive air conditioning controls, but far too many buttons on the steering wheel.

Space on board: generous, the good balance between the compact SUV type 3008/Tiguan and their 7-seater alternatives 5008/Tiguan Allspace, with a total length of 4.60 m.

Storage and trunk: in the standard at the level of the front passengers, very roomy trunk (580 l) for the segment. Better than a nearly equivalent-sized Ford Kuga.

Connectivity: outdated touchscreen graphics, but full connectivity.

Comfort and pleasure

Amortization : rather considerate, but far from being a model of dynamism. Prefers a cast pipe.

Direction : consistent and informative.

Engine/transmission approval: Tonic thermal/electric combination, controlled CVT gearbox revs.

Soundproofing: correct.

Prix

Equipment: plethoric in this Trail finish, antechamber to the top of the range.

Consumption : almost identical to the rest of the range, despite the presence of 4-wheel drive. It is easy to go below the 6 l mark in town and 7 l on the secondary network or on the highway thanks to the excellent management of hybridization.

Prizes and bonuses/penalties: very correct in view of the benefit of all-wheel drive. Penalty of only €150 (132 g of CO2)

Our opinion

WE love

  • The assumed 4×4 look of this version with a more inspired look than the rest of the range
  • All-wheel drive without overconsumption
  • Space on board

We love less

  • Interior lacking character

Verdict

Criticized for its mannered exterior style, when it was launched in 2018, the RAV4 is improved with this Trail version with an assumed look. It remains one of the best choices in the segment given its low consumption, despite its imposing size. And the legendary reliability of Toyota hybridization can only reassure potential buyers.
