It will soon be over with featherweight sportswomen on Hethel’s side. You are not dreaming: it is indeed a 100% electric SUV that Lotus is launching.
Lotus SUV (2022) – The British craftsman, fell into the hands of Chinese Geely in 2017, has just started its revolution. After the launch of its ultimate thermal model called Emira, in the coming months, Lotus will swear by the electric. He who advocated lightness rather than the race for power, to develop its small coupés, will finally give in to the sirens of a technology in cold with the scales.
Heavy tribute
“Light is right” has lead in the wing. Lotus founder Colin Chapman’s famous business promise will become less and less tenable in the coming years as electric SUVs (double punishment) will invest the brand’s catalog. From 2022, a very large crossover, such as Porsche Cayenne or Aston Martin DBX will kick off the “mass market” zero-emission models. He will be joined in 2023 by a low sedan able to compete with the Tesla Model S, then by a second reduced-size SUV, running in 2025, with’a coupe, developed in partnership with Alpine, does not cover this range, by 2026.
China Girl
It is China that will see the birth, next year, the first round of the original Lotus SUV. In addition to a production site based in Wuhan, capable of assembling 150,000 vehicles per year, a test circuit is planned to develop the new mastodon. However, purists will be reassured to learn that the historic facilities of Hethel, England, will continue to be used for the development of the most radical sports.
Dream specs
Reminiscent of a certain Lamborghini Urus, at the sight of the silhouette sketched by the first official teaser, the Lotus SUV (code name 132) will be based on an unprecedented platform on which the future models mentioned above will be based. For now, from its technical sheet, we simply know that the batteries will offer capacities ranging from 92 to 120 kWh, and super-fast recharges. No doubt they will rely on 800 V technology, in the manner of Porsche Taycan and Hyundai Ioniq 5, to recover 80% of autonomy in less than 20 minutes, provided they are connected to a supercharger.
Prix Lotus SUV
Appointment current 2022 to attend the revelation of the Lotus SUV, whose official name has not yet been known. On the price side, expect an entrance ticket of more than 150,000 €. With the arrival of this new 100% electric range, and in view of the production capacities of the Chinese factory, the Sino-British firm definitely sets out to compete with Porsche on equal terms. Thanks Geely!
