Road safety: new signage for pedestrians and cyclists
ADVERTISEMENT

Road safety is changing with new signs for crossing pedestrians and cyclists on zebra crossings, as well as for respecting the safety distance in tunnels.

The Highway Code is changing. By a decree of June 13, 2022, published in the Official Journal on July 5changes to signage have been made to make pedestrians and cyclists cross the road more safely and to respect the safety distance in tunnels.

A count for pedestrian crossings

Already tested in the cities of Strasbourg (67), Vannes (56) and Neuilly-sur-Seine (92), the signage indicating the time to wait and the time remaining to cross a pedestrian crossing has officially entered the Highway Code . The countdown, which works in the same way as that regularly integrated into construction site traffic lights, should encourage pedestrians to wait a few seconds. rather than taking risks by crossing at a red light. According to Road Safety, the experiment in the three cities mentioned above has also improved the overall behavior of users and pedestrian crossing at the green light by 1 to 5% on the various sites.

This new signage is also accompanied by a mixed pedestrian-cycle traffic light. Tested in Strasbourg, this signaling can be used when a cycle path is parallel to a pedestrian crossing for crossing a street. It indicates the crossing rules for cyclists and pedestrians, which are sometimes not respected by users. Under the usual red and green men, there is also a green and red bicycle visual.

New information signs on safety distances in tunnels

To respect the safety distance in the tunnels, new signs recalling the rules have been incorporated into the Highway Code.

In tunnels, the rule is to respect a safety distance of two seconds (70 to 150 meters), even when stationary. In particular, this makes it possible to easily free up space during the intervention of the emergency services in the event of a fire. Not very respected, this rule is nevertheless easy to follow thanks to lights installed on each wall. As a reminder of the rule, two new signs are entering the Highway Code and in certain tunnels. They indicate the markers to use to respect the distance: two blue beacons between two cars, and three beacons between a car and a truck. The experiment in the Foix tunnel in Ariège (09) has borne fruit and could be extended to other French tunnels.
