For the second generation of its Amarok pick-up, Volkswagen uses the technical basis of the Ford Ranger, also renewed this year.
Twelve years after launching its first Amarok, Volkswagen is delighted with its success with more than 830,000 units sold worldwide. Encouraged by this success, unlike the Renault Alaskan and Mercedes X-Class which quickly gave up, Volkswagen is offering a second generation pick-up. But this time, the German manufacturer is joining forces with Ford, which has immense experience with its famous Ranger.
more muscular
This second generation of Amarok therefore takes up the base of the Ford Ranger renewed this year, with dimensions revised upwards. VW’s pickup grows almost 10 cm, and offers 17 cm more wheelbase (3.27 m). The total length of the Amarok therefore increases to 5.35 m. It becomes more massive but also more aggressive, with a front face comprising a large X. This element, gray or black depending on the finishes, connects the headlights and the grille to the shield, which includes a large protective shoe.
On board, the Amarok offers a new dashboard. The dashboard incorporates a central touch screen in portrait format (like the Ranger!) from 10 to 12 inches depending on the finish, and a second 8 to 12 inch panel for displaying the counters and driving information. Beneath the central display are a few shortcut buttons that look classy, while the whole massive surround is black plastic.
Two diesels in Europe
Depending on the markets, two body variants will be offered: single cab with two doors or double cab with four doors. Thus, the depth of the skip varies between 1.54 m and 2.30 m. According to VW, two European standard pallets (120 x 80 cm) can fit easily. The payload goes from 935 kg on the old generation to 1,160 kg now. Finally, the towing capacity is up to 3,500 kg depending on the engine.
On the engine side, the new Amarok will have four diesel engines and a petrol engine depending on the market, ranging from 150 to 300 hp. In Europe, the pick-up should carry two diesels: a four-cylinder 2.0 biturbo with 204 hp and 500 Nm of torque, and a 3.0 V6 of 241 hp developing 600 Nm of torque. For the V6, the transmission is operated by a ten-speed automatic gearbox. The four-cylinder offers the choice of a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.
Marketing and prices
The Amarok comes standard with a 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, with four selectable modes using a dial on the center console: off-road by default, 4H mode for driving on slippery surfaces, 4L mode for low-speed off-road and 2H mode to send power to the rear wheels only, in order to reduce consumption in particular.
The new Volkswagen Amarok will be marketed at the end of 2022, with five trim levels in total. The French range and prices have not yet been revealed.
