To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Golf R, Volkswagen is offering an eponymous limited series. Marketed for only one year, this collector offers 333 hp and a specific decoration.
Started in 2002 with the Golf R32, the Golf R saga celebrates its twentieth anniversary this year. The opportunity for the Wolfsburg brand to offer an exclusive special series, the Golf R 20 years. This takes the base of the Golf 8 R, to which it adds some additional horsepower and specific design elements.
This 20-year-old Golf R features the “classic” R’s 2.0 turbo four-cylinder, but it indeed adds a handful of horses (+ 13 hp) to reach 333 hp. The new engine setting improves speed when changing gears. To show off, a specific start mode pushes the engine speed to 2500 rpm directly to make the four-outlet exhaust sing. The 0 to 100 km / hy also wins with 4.6 seconds only, while the top speed is electronically limited to 270 km / h. Like the Golf R, the block is associated with 4Motion all-wheel drive and a DSG automatic gearbox, which can of course switch to manual mode with the paddles or with the lever in the S or S+ position.
More than €62,000 for the limited edition
The “20-year-old” Golf R is equipped as standard with the “R-Performance” package, already present on the Golf 8 R. This package includes R-Performance Torque Vectoring in combination with the dynamic handling manager and two additional driving profiles Special and Drift. On the outside, the anniversary limited series is distinguished by a more imposing spoiler, 19-inch light alloy rims which can be painted black or blue, and specific “R” and “20 years” badges. On board, it is the first VW to receive real carbon inserts. The Nappa leather seats are covered with an embroidered blue R logo, which is also found on the steering wheel.
All these specificities have a cost. On the French market, the 20-year-old Golf R is available from €62,700. A salty price, which shows the collector aspect of the vehicle, to which it will be necessary to add the penalty. The model will be produced in the German factory in Wolfsburg.
