Herbert Diess, boss of the Volkswagen group for four years, will leave his post during the summer. He will be replaced by Oliver Blume, the current president of Porsche.
After the Dieselgate scandal, which had strongly affected the Volkswagen group, its new president Herbert Diess had embarked on a major transformation. This notably involved a forced transition to electric, with the development of the ID range. After four difficult years at the head of the group, the Austrian will leave his post this summer.
Pushed out?
It is in a press release from the Volkswagen group that we learn the news. The surprise departure of the VW boss would have been decided “by mutual agreement” at a meeting of the group’s supervisory board. Controversial, Diess had been on the hot seat for several months after numerous disagreements with other members of the executive and staff representatives. The decision therefore looks more like a formal dismissal, potentially supported by the Porsche and Piech families. according to information from Reuters.
Herbert Diess, formerly of BMW, took over as head of the Volkswagen brand in 2015 in the midst of Dieselgate, then of the entire group in 2018. He is known for his strict positions and his particularly rough management. For example, we remember some of his exits, such as when he suggested that there were 30,000 “excess” employees in the group, which has 660,000 worldwide. Each time, the 63-year-old Austrian apologized for his controversial remarks and managed by a pirouette to keep his job. Nevertheless, he had lost responsibility over time. He had lost the management of the Volkswagen brand in 2020 then the responsibility for the group’s operations in China in 2021, in favor of Ralf Brandstätter in both cases.
Bring back the human
Oliver Blume, current CEO of Porsche, will replace Diess on September 1, Volkswagen announced in its press release. This indicates that Blume “will have to continue the transformation initiated”, but “with a culture of governance that puts team spirit at its heart”. A message that the future boss of the group is already taking literally. The man underlined in a tweet his ambition: “what is decisive for success is team spirit, fair play and passion”.
