As barrier-free tolls expand on highways, take a closer look at this technology and how it works.
In recent years, a new system has been slowly but surely developing on the motorways of France. The barrier-free toll. First appearing on the A4 at Boulay in Moselle, but also more recently on the A79, this device makes it possible to cross a toll without even stopping at the barrier. This regardless of their situation, method of payment, etc.
For it, the portal simply detects the vehicle, according to the equipment chosen by the driver. It thus concerns the license plate or the means of payment stuck on the windscreen. Indeed, these two elements can be used for payment.
The means of payment to validate the passage of a barrier-free toll
Because to cross and pay a barrier-free toll, several solutions are available. It is possible to use a classic electronic toll badge. If it is stuck on the windshield, it is detected by the cameras and scanners on the gantry. The latter validates the passage.
In the same style as electronic toll payment, a payment “label” is offered. The latter is also stick on your windshield. It allows you to pay the next toll a package with monthly direct debit or a rechargeable passfor more occasional use.
Finally, for motorists who do not choose these solutions, the toll… is not free. No, sorry. Indeed, it is possible to pay online after each visit, within 10 days. Of the payment terminals can also sometimes be made available, in order to pay directly.
What are the penalties for non-payment?
Attention in case of non-payment, the fine is salty. The public service website indicates that in the event of a breach, a notice of payment is sent to the domicile of the offender. This last “indicates the total amount to be paid: lump sum indemnity [et] amount TTC (…) unpaid toll.
The amount must be paid within two monthsbut the lump sum may be reduced in the event of payment within 15 days. The latter can thus go from 90€ to 10€. She can also increase to 375€ once the two months have elapsed, with no reaction from the offender. In the event of a repeat offense of more than five unpaid tickets for 12 months in a row, the fine then rises to 7,500 euros.
