Green MPs plan to include a lower speed limit on highways in the future climate law, expected this fall.
In France, we don’t have oil, but we have ideas. With a new energy crisis caused by the war in Ukraine, the start of the 2022 school year will look like the year 1973. During his television interview on July 14, the President of the Republic announced the implementation of a “big sobriety” so that “we can put ourselves in a position to consume less”.
The priority is to save electricity, in the face of the fear, this time very real, of the blackout. In particular, administrations will be asked to lower the heating or limit the lighting. The large supermarket chains have also committed to taking this type of measure from October 15. Mr and Mrs Toulemonde will also be encouraged to make gestures, which will allow both to avoid the juice cut and to reduce bills. There should also be, as in 1973, a communication campaign to avoid waste hunting!
And on the fuel side? So far, nothing has been announced. On this point, there are not 36 solutions to save money: you have to slow down. Everyone is already free to do so to reduce their consumption and thus improve their autonomy with a very expensive full tank. But can we go through the constraint, with a drop in speed limits?

Discount on fuels: E85 at 60 cents per liter at the start of the school year?
A precedent in 1973
A little flashback: in 1973, a 100 km/h limit was put in place on the roads. This is not linked to the oil shock, the reflection being carried out for several years, and accelerated by a catastrophic road death toll in 1972. On the other hand, the oil shock will help the government to pass the pill. And it will encourage the implementation of a 120 km/h limit on the motorways. This will be raised for a few months to 140 km/h, according to Georges Pompidou’s wishes, before being set at 130 km/h at the end of 1974.
So no change since… until 2022 and its new oil shock? Clearly, the subject will be invited in the news of the start of the school year. In an interview given to Le Parisien, the green deputy Sandrine Rousseau announces that her group will propose a reduction in speed on the motorways during the study of a climate bill… if the government has not already even retained this idea.
In 2020, Emmanuel Macron had already categorically rejected a drop in the 110 km/h limit on motorways, proposed by the Citizen’s Climate Convention, aware of the unpopularity of the measure, especially after the 80 km/h on departmental roads. . But this time, the context is different. There is of course the economic and energy crisis… and the Head of State has lost the absolute majority in the National Assembly. We could well have surprises if the idea is discussed in Parliament!
However, we imagine that 110 km / h would be very difficult to accept. On the other hand, 120 km/h can be the right compromise. And as in 1973, the energy crisis would help to pass the pill!
