Eric Zemmour: what he forgets to say about the points license
ADVERTISEMENT

Not yet a presidential candidate, the far-right polemicist spoke about the automobile and especially the points license.

The points permit “is useless”. Motorway speed limits are “unnecessary”. Guest of the RTL – Le Figaro – LCI Grand Jury, Eric Zemmour gave his vision of public policies concerning transport, automobile and two-wheelers.

Not a candidate (for the moment) in the presidential election next April, the far-right polemicist has in particular scratched the license with points. “It is a racketeering organized by the State” assures Eric Zemmour, evoking the 75 million euros of annual income related to the points recovery courses.

What he says…

The polemicist assures us that countries that do not use the points license are better placed than France in terms of road safety statistics. He notably cites Finland and Switzerland. On these specific cases, Eric Zemmour is telling the truth …

Suisse (2019)

  • 187 dead
  • 8.5 million inhabitants
  • 22 deaths per million inhabitants

Finland (2019)

  • 211 dead
  • 5.5 million inhabitants
  • 38 deaths per million inhabitants

France (2019)

  • 3,244 dead
  • 67.2 million inhabitants
  • 48 deaths per million inhabitants

What he doesn’t say …

But the polemicist does not say everything. Several European states refusing the permit on time display statistics equivalent or superior to that of France (46 deaths per million inhabitant).

Belgium (2019)

  • 644 dead
  • 11.5 million inhabitants
  • 56 deaths per million inhabitants

Portugal (2019)

  • 474 dead
  • 10.3 million inhabitants
  • 46 deaths per million inhabitants

Slovakia (2019)

  • 245 dead
  • 5.5 million inhabitants
  • 44 deaths per million inhabitants

Similarly, countries using the point-based permit system (1) present more favorable statistics than France …

Germany (2019)

  • 3,046 dead
  • 83.1 million inhabitants
  • 37 deaths per million inhabitants

Denmark (2019)

  • 199 dead
  • 5.8 million inhabitants
  • 34 deaths per million inhabitants

This shows that the examples cited by Eric Zemmour have their limits. Cultural factors, driver training or the condition of infrastructure count as much, if not more, than the scale punishing offenses.

(1) These two countries use a “reverse” point license: drivers start with zero points and accumulate units according to their infractions.
