Stellantis will invest in three American factories with the aim of developing a new engine. This will serve as the basis for a rechargeable hybrid engine.
Three American factories of Stellantis will evolve to accommodate the production of a new engine. These are the plants in Dundee, Michigan, Kokomo, Indiana, and Toronto, Canada.
Modifications to these structures will allow a 1.6 liter turbo engine to be built on the American continent. This direct-injection four-cylinder could serve as the basis for the group’s future plug-in hybrid engines.
The objective of Stellantis would be to be able to manufacture across the Atlantic the engine which it currently integrates in several models. This engine would therefore not be a brand new power unit, but the one found in particular in Peugeot’s PHEV range.

The Michigan plant will receive the bulk of this $99 million investment. It is this infrastructure that will assemble the engine thanks to 83 million dollars. Manufacturing of the engine block will take place in Indiana, thanks to a $14 million modernization.
Stellantis will devote only two million dollars to the Canadian factory, for the manufacture of the oil pans. According to the group, the production of this engine will start at the beginning of the year 2025.
