While the year 2022 is already well underway, nothing has yet been decided for the future Euro7 standard, which poses a problem for manufacturers.
What will the Euro 7 standard be made of? The question remains unresolved. Indeed, while the month of August has already passed by half, nothing is done yet. Its adoption was, however, planned for fourth quarter of 2021, then to July 20, 2022, before being pushed back to the fall. The ACEA (association bringing together European car manufacturers) hoped that all this would be done « quickly in 2022« . For enforcement on the horizon 2025-2026.
The time will therefore be short, very short for the builders. They will have to deal with much tougher legislation than previously. The reduction of nitrogen oxides produced by the vehicles could go up to 50% for diesels (40% for gasoline). It could also relate to a decrease in various other pollutants.
This should have been implemented at December 31, 2025 for newly approved private vehicles. Before an arrival 12 months later on the rest of the constructions. A judged calendar ambitious by ACEA in past discussions. The builders were however ready to accept it, if the lines were fixed quickly.
Too late for the schedule of manufacturers on the Euro7 standard?
Nothing having been adopted yet, the ACEA warns that this ambitious schedule will only be « plus tenable because of these delays”. The association has also invited the Commission to take into account the already massive investments made by the sector, in order to comply with the latest measures. But also to develop electrification and deal with the ban on heat engines by 2035.
It remains to be seen what will be decided in the coming months. It should also be remembered that, according to the boss of Volkswagen, this Euro7 standard will lead to a new large additional cost. Of the order of 3,000 to 5,000 euros for internal combustion vehicles. What to tend a little more towards the end of the car accessible to all?
