In the second quarter of 2022, sales of electric cars lost momentum in Europe. They even fell on several markets.
For several months now, sales of electric cars have been steadily growing. A simple fashion effect? Still, while the public authorities are pushing for the purchase of these vehicles, sales are already slumping in some countries.
Indeed, in the second quarter of 2022 in Europe, the latter did not only increased by 10%, according to figures from EV Volumes (electric car sales database). An interesting number after the 59% increase experienced during the first quarter of the current year.
Even more interestingly, sales started to drop in some markets. This from the month of Juneas for Italy (-1.9%), Germany (-3.5%) or even Norway (-10.6%). Worse in July, for sales of electrified vehicles (including 100% electric cars and plug-in hybrids). In effect, the market fell by 7% in Switzerland, 8% in Germany, 13% in the United Kingdom, 25% in Italy. The prize for the biggest decrease remains to be awarded to the Norway, with a 33% collapse in sales.
Shortages, aid, why are sales of electric cars falling?
Overall in Europe, the decrease reached 6% in July. All this is due to different reasons. Shortages affecting many companies prevent the delivery of vehicles. Stellantis as Renault have known in France. Tesla is suffering for its part in Shanghai, with the “zero-Covid” policy. The start of the Berlin Gigafactory is also difficult.
Furthermore, the tax policies of some countries are being changed. This is particularly the case for the Norway, which no longer encourages the purchase of vehicles of this type. This is not the case of France, which has extended its ecological bonus a few months, when it was to be reduced. Speaking of money, the price of the cars is also unattractive. To see how sales will evolve in the months to come.
