Xiaomi does not hide its ambitions regarding its entry into the electric car market. But he comes up against administrative problems which could lead him to an association with BAIC.
Like all Chinese new technology giants, Xiaomi is very interested in the automobile. But beyond investments in various start-ups, he intends to launch his own vehicles in 2024. But he is now running into administrative problems that could seriously delay the project.
Indeed, despite the acquisition of the former Borgward factory, the telephony giant has no production license. A precious sesame, which has become a rare commodity. Faced with overcapacity, the number of manufacturers who come forward, new licenses are almost impossible to obtain.
Solution ? Use an existing license. Either by buying a “zombie builder” or with contract production. What many other newcomers like Nio, Xpeng, Weltmeister, etc. have already done. Until now, the Nios have been produced in partnership with JAC, the Xpengs with Haima and Weltmeister has acquired Polarsun.
BAIC future partner of Xiaomi
Xiaomi is therefore studying this solution in turn and BAIC seems to be the last manufacturer in the running to sign a partnership with it. Several hypotheses seem to be envisaged: the takeover of a BAIC plant in Qingdao (Shandong province in the east of the country), with its license, or the partial takeover of a BAIC-Hyundai plant in the Beijing region. In the first case, Xiaomi could produce its own cars autonomously. In the second, the vehicles could be sold by both Xiaomi and BAIC under the Beijing brand.
