According to a study, the demand for spare parts should fall by 30% with the advent of electric cars. This should lead to profound upheavals.
Everyone knows that the automotive world has undergone profound changes in order to make room for the electric car. This upsets the habits of many sectors and can raise questions about the sustainability of certain models. This is particularly the case for the spare parts market.
A study of cabinet d’analyse Roland Berger for the European Association of Equipment Manufacturers has attempted to predict the upheavals that the world of spare parts will have to face. These look violent. Indeed, the study explains that electric cars reduce spare parts purchases by 30%.
Consequently, spare parts turnover is expected to decline by as much as 13% to 17% by 2040, points the study. Sellers will indeed have the opportunity to cushion the fall thanks to elements related to suspensions and tires. Demand for the latter should indeed grow, driven by the greater weight of electric vehicles.
Manufacturers could fight to regain market share
Parts specific to electric cars, on the other hand, will open up new horizons. This concerns in particular the battery, for 100% electric cars as well as rechargeable hybrids. Change it will cost from 3,000 to 15,000 euros, approximately every eight to 12 years. This could give a lucrative market, estimated at four billion euros by 2040.
Parts related to power electronics (which convert electrical power into driving force) will also be a sore point. The market is estimated at two billion euros. What could interest the builders, when they left the latter up to 60% to subcontractors, reports Digital.
Why fewer spare parts for electric cars?
These forecasts are explained by the fact that parts related to electric cars are sometimes much less complex than those of thermal cars. This concerns both the complexity of the engine itself and exhaust, fuel intake or gearbox. These last elements are profoundly modified, or even disappear, on the EVs.
A study by PwC Strategy& commissioned for the European Association of Automotive Suppliers (CLEPA) recently reported that 275,000 jobs are at risk by 2040. Many industry players will have to adapt to all these changes.
