Telecoop connects telephony and ecological transition

With 1.29 billion smartphones sold worldwide in 2020 and an impact of around 3.7% of greenhouse gas emissions, digital must be able to evolve to meet the challenges of ecological transition. In any case, this is the idea of the first cooperative telecom operator: TeleCoop.

Allow everyone to reclaim their digital uses and offer more telecom services transparenttransparentmore ecological and more respectful of privacy: this is the ambition of TeleCoop as explained by Marion Graeffly, one of the co-founders of the cooperative.

What is your solution?

Marion Graeffly : TeleCoop is the first cooperative telecom operator committed to the ecological and solidarity transition. We want both to fight againstplanned obsolescenceplanned obsolescence and allow citizens to regain control of their digital uses. We therefore offer two mobile plans for this: “Sobriety” at 10 euros, calls and SMS included and billing on the basis of actual mobile data consumption at 2 euros per GB, and “Transition” with an additional 9 GB of data and financial assistance for repairs worth 30 euros per year.

Why did you choose the cooperative world?

Marion Graeffly : The cooperative world makes it possible to deal with social issues, in particular ecological ones, in a voluntary and unconstrained manner. It is a collective commitment in which everyone can get involved and co-create, and which, therefore, offers interesting capacities for innovation. Hence also our participation in the movementmovement of the Licoornes, with which we can tackle the causes and roots by proposing a systemic response and building new economic models. This allows us to shake up the players in the sector in which we operate by bringing a different vision and in-depth reflection at the societal level.

Why your start-up will change the world?

Marion Graeffly : Our action porteporte first of all on the energy impact of mobile plans, knowing that, for an equivalent mobile data consumption, the 4G4G consumes up to 3 times more than the Wi-FiWi-Fi. It is also a question of tackling the problematic subject of planned obsolescence with the equipment which would be responsible for 60 to 90% of thedigital footprintdigital footprint in France, according to a study carried out jointly by theAdemeAdeme and Arcep.

One of the recommended solutions lies in the extension of the durationduration life of smartphones. Contrary to the average French person who changes terminal every 2 and a half years, our subscribers keep it for 3 and a half years. Finally, we carry out awareness-raising actions on digital sobriety through webinars and training. Some 3,000 people benefited last year and we expect to triple that number in 2022.

How did the project grow?

Marion Graeffly : After a career in marketing and communication in the food industry, I wanted to get professionally involved in environmental and societal issues that were close to my heart, such as the question of digital technology, and particularly telecoms, to change the established rules and allow a civic reappropriation of the subject. As the sector is regulated, the first step was to identify a network partner.

We opted for Orange, in particular because the company is partly owned by the State and it therefore responded to a notion of public service. Then, the whole challenge was to build the infrastructure, then to market the first packages in December 2020. As far as financing is concerned, we wanted to remain as independent as possible, hence the choice also of the cooperative model, with 100% of the shares held by our members, which has also enabled us to build an offer that meets their expectations and challenges.

What’s next in the story?

Marion Graeffly : We should exceed 6,000 subscribers and 1,000 members by the end of the year. We very recently launched a specific offer dedicated to professionals and are working to complete it by mattermatter services to meet their needs. We are also going to experiment next year with an Internet service provider solution as an alternative to 4G and thus offer a coherent and complete offer.

If you were Prime Minister, what key measure would you put in place?

Marion Graeffly : I am convinced that pointing the finger at individual responsibility is not the solution, but on the contrary a signal of political inaction. As Prime Minister, I would insist on analyzing where the environmental impact is greatest; I would put in place measures to remedy this, but also to support large companies so that they can, by their size, set up ambitious transition plans and bring others on board with them. I also think that there is an important subject on tax incentives to achieve this and thus better redistribute wealth.

“Pointing the finger at individual responsibility is not the solution, but on the contrary a signal of political inaction”

What will the world look like in 2050?

Marion Graeffly : The world in 2050 will be for me more partitioned by more marked borders, but also with conflicts for access to resources in energyenergy or in water for example. The company will be two gearsgears between those who anticipated the resilienceresilience and sobriety, and those who will endure it in poverty which is ultimately unwanted sobriety. This is why all the initiatives carried out in particular in the cooperatives, the third places, are important because they make it possible to try to find new solutions which, I hope, will infuse into the rest of society.

What Futura hot topic excites you?

Marion Graeffly : The one on soil artificialization in France. If the action of TeleCoop relates to the question of digital, for us, it is also representative of a constant in our society around the “always more”. The development of the artificialization of the soil to build ever more roads and housing when we could now enter into a logic of reusing what already exists and better sharing the land already used is all the more worrying because it is one of the main causes of climate changeclimate change and the collapse of the biodiversitybiodiversity.
