TotalEnergies should pay up to 30 billion dollars in taxes and duties worldwide in 2022. A small part of which in France.
TotalEnergies will get its hands on the wallet this year, in order to pay its taxes. Indeed, the French energy company could pay up to $30 billion in various taxes on profits and production, worldwide.
The CEO of the company, Patrick Pouyanné, specified these amounts in front of the deputies. The elected members of the flash mission on “superprofits” were indeed looking to find out more about this tax component. The businessman responded by assuring that he was paying “profit taxin the countries where we carry them out”.
What should do raise the note to “30 billion” dollars this year. In 2020, this figure was not only six billion. Blame it on the fall in oil prices, linked to the emergence of Covid-19. One year later, this amount increased to “16 billion”.
TotalEnergies will only pay a few of these taxes in France
Nevertheless the majority of these taxes will not be paid in France. Patrick Pouyanné talks about“a contribution (…) of the order of 1.6 billion to 1.9 billion euros per year in the French budget« . This concerns about one billion euros in social security contributions. In France, the activities of TotalEnergies are indeed less profitable, even at a loss.
“The vast majority” of this sum of 30 billion dollars will fall in the pockets of oil-producing countries. The taxation of the latter is in fact adapted with “oil prices”. It’s about a “rent captured by the countries (…) that produce natural resources”.
Remember that in France, TotalEnergies is threatened by the introduction of a tax on superprofits. The company is indeed making huge profits with the rise in oil prices, following the crisis situation in Ukraine.
To avoid being subjected to such a measure, which could cost it several billion euros, the energy company has implemented a discount at the pump in its stations. The latter should represent a shortfall of around half a billion euros.
